Assuming 10 players per 512mb (which doesn't really scale but we will use it for this rough calculation), we need 51,200GB to support 1 million players. Spread across 256GB servers we would need 200 servers to be part of the network and at $400/month for a dual Xeon E5 at this RAM capacity that would be $80,000/month in server rental alone, to manage the servers would need a tremendous amount of man power so to make a profit I would need to hire more staff and charge around $100,000 to $120,000 per month.
This of course assumes I can source 200 servers from my suppliers. Unlikely. Therefore we have to build it ourselves meaning buying server equipment and collocating everything in a datacenter.
