Using a network sniffer reveals a lot of TCP retransmissions to and from the server, which indicates packet loss. This doesn't happen with any other communication, just minecraft SMP. Googling "java tcp retransmissions" reveals... Not a lot to me personally, because I'm not a java programmer. Packet buffering is mentioned in some of the results, but when I used the tcpbuffer program nothing changed.

I've tried playing from another computer and experienced the same symptoms, and also turned off the snooper but that didn't help. This problem existed long before the snooper was implemented, and nothing in the setting affects it.

Something interesting I found: apparently this problem isn't for *all* servers. There was one server (which is now gone unfortunately) where I didn't experience this problem almost at all, except when a mob or a player took damage. I don't know why that was or how to find another such server. I think it had to do with the hosting company - something like redstone hosting - because the server moved several times but kept the hosting company; when it was changed the problem worsened.

This issue *still* needs to be looked at, or at least have Mojang acknowledge it. Minecraft can't be considered a full game when so many people can't play multiplayer because of a bug.

Does this happen on other servers as well? If it does, and you don't cause others to lag when you log in, you might be suffering from the Mysterious Lag issue. The server gets the information about your actions instantly, but the client doesn't receive updates from the server, and eventually you get disconnected. It's ancient, and some people haven't been able to play multiplayer since Beta 1.3 and others since alpha, but so far no one at mojang has even acknowledged it exists. It's unknown what causes it, and there is no fix, though various people have solved it in various ways - sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't.

The code freeze is the best time for this problem to be located and fixed so that all those people can finally play multiplayer, which is the main focus of development. So... *Boink*

If it's lag, and it's mysterious, it's probably the Mysterious Lag disease. The disease lets the server receive information about your actions immediately, but somehow causes the client to lag behind and receive (or maybe just present) the information very slowly, if at all.
The issue seems to have been around since beta 1.3 (although, if you say you haven't been able to connect since alpha, it might be something much older and thus deeper in the Minecraft code), and so far it received no official recognition despite a large portion of the playerbase complaining about it. Its cause is unknown and there is no fix for it, but various people have managed to get rid of it through various means (as seen in the link). Perhaps you, too, will be so fortunate; I am not.

I don't think it's a "Wow, it's crazy what people will do to get high" so much as a "Wow, it's crazy we live in such a ****ed up world that people will go to such lengths to escape it."

I don't imagine most users of this are thinking "I want to have a good time, maybe I will cook up some gasoline and iodine and codeine and red phosphorous in my kitchen"

    I believe so too.

I imagine they're thinking something more along the lines of "Welp, my parents are either dead or unemployed, I and everyone I know have no future, and in general I feel like FFFFFUUUU-- so I might as well poke myself full of holes."
They then discover that, for a short while after ingesting the poison, they no longer feel like FFFFUUUU, so they continue to poke themselves so as to not feel FFFFUUUU (especially now that they've destroyed their minds and bodies and developed a horrible dependency on the poison and its sources). This continues until they run out of means, at which time they turn to more accessible and worse poisons such as this.
And, of course, now they're feeling a lot like FFFFFFUUUU because their soft tissue is slowly leaving this reality and their bones are compelled by the notion of seceding and declaring independence.

    So, yeah. FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU-

Sounds a lot like this (from the Known Bugs wiki section):

    • Pressing a jump, movement, or sneak key at exactly the same time as opening the inventory will cause the action to be held. The inventory may then be closed, and the action will continue until the according key is pressed or the inventory is opened. Multiple keys may be "toggled" in this way. This trick can also be performed by clicking workbenches, furnaces, chests or dispensers.
    • Sometimes a jump or move key will get jammed and you will keep moving until you press the key that would normally make you jump or move that direction.
It happens to me a lot, and is very annoying and potentially dangerous when it happens. Try to see if you can reproduce it on purpose: move in any direction or jump, and try to either left- or right-click at the exact same time. After a few attempts the move/jump key you pressed will be "jammed" and you will keep moving or jumping until you push that button again, or open a menu or the inventory.

Notch is pretty much the only one who can fix this; if this is indeed your problem, there's nothing you can do except avoid clicking and moving at the same time.

This sounds like yet another case of the Mysterious Lag disease. Many players suffer from it and have complained about it, no official response has ever been given, and no solution exists. It seems to have been introduced introduced in beta version 1.3 and it makes multiplayer unplayable for anyone suffering from it (which is especially ironic, as the wiki says multiplayer is "the focus of development" of Minecraft but no one at Mojang seems to care or even notice it.)

posted a message on Insane lag in multiplayer
I'm quite sure what you're describing is the mysterious lag issue I've linked to. As the wiki describes it:

Quote from Known Bugs section »
Some players have issues where they can send information to a server fine, but have large amounts of lag when receiving information from the server. This results in SMP being unplayable for players who experience this bug.

Maybe something random you'll do will fix it for you, maybe something random Notch will do will fix it in a future release. This issue is not hardware related and there is currently no sure-fire fix for it. Notch has been bugged and spammed and whatnot about it ever since it was introduced in beta 1.3 (this thread on getsatisfaction is only one out of many), but there was never an official response. In the meantime, everyone suffering from this can't play multiplayer.

This is a problem many players seem to have with multiplayer. There is an old 25-page thread about it here, and the conclusion from it is that no one really has a clue what's going on.

Do chunks also take a long time to load? Does it happen on other servers as well? Is everything else connected to the internet (outside Minecraft) functioning fine? If so, you might also be suffering from mysterious lag; there's a topic about it, but no surefire solution yet, unfortunately.
