the 1.8 is a pre release so it could be because of all the bugs in the game currently thats slowing down your computer

it is sort of like installing a mod
what you do to install it is
1. go to you .bin folder
2. delete the old (1.7.3) minecraft.jar
3. put the minecraft.jar you downloaded into the.bin folder and close the window
4. start up minecraft like usual
