Quote from IronMagus
Whenever someone complains of a mob spawner that "spawns just a few mobs and then stops," it is almost certainly because their "holding area" where they store the mobs to be killed is too close to the spawner. If there are more than six mobs, of the type spawned by the spawner, within eight blocks horizontally and four blocks vertically, of the spawner block itself, it will not spawn any more mobs until some of the existing ones either die or leave the zone. You can end up with slightly more than six because some mobs will leave the zone temporarily (i.e. through a water-elevator) and then re-enter when they fall back down into the "holding area," with more having spawned in the meantime. I'm almost one hundred percent positive that this is your issue. Move the holding cell another few blocks away from the spawner, and it should work just fine, without jamming up.

IronMagus posted a message on XP farm problemzollie and Lister have got the right idea. Marinade, he gave enough clues in the OP to indicate that it's clearly a zombie dungeon-spawner XP farm. Frog, the monster spawner ignores the global mob cap, so lighting caves or otherwise eliminating nearby spawns won't actually help at all in this situation. Here is my quoted response, from the last time this question came up:Posted in: Survival Mode

Mute posted a message on Looking at the damage mechanicsA couple of days ago I was messing around on my survival world with my new enchanted diamond sword and some strength potions, after a while of messing around I realized that I was able to kill endermen in 1 hit. Since I didn't know that this was possible to do I decided to see what made it so I did so much damage.Posted in: Discussion
The first thing I thought it might be was the sharpness enchantment, but it only adds 1.25 damage per level which means the sharpness V would add 6.25 to the diamonds swords 8 damage for a total 14.25 damage per swing, not even enough to kill a spider in one hit, no where even close to 1 hit killing an enderman.
So the next thing I checked was the strength potions and saw that a level 2 strength potion gives a 260% damage increase.
While some of you might not think that it's a lot when you look closer it gives a massive damage boost. For example a wooden sword has a base attack of 5 damage the 260% boost from a level 2 strength potion would add an additional 13 points of damage to the wooden swords 5 for a total of 18 damage, nearly 4 more points of damage than a sharpness V diamond sword.
When you compare what sharpness adds compared to strength it seems completely useless. And if you add in critical hits with the strength potions it just makes sharpness look worse than it already does. But before we add the critical hits I want to point out some information on the wiki that seems incorrect about them.
I also noticed that the information on the wiki about critical hits doesn't seem to be true anymore. It says that a critical hit will do a random amount of additional damage up to 50% more (rounded down) plus one heart.
From some tests that I've done I've found that critical hits don't do a random amount of damage, it always adds 50% damage to your attack. After finding out that that part of the info was wrong I decided to test out whether critical hits added a heart worth of damage after adding the 50%.
I tried it out with a stone sword. According to the wiki a stone sword with a critical should do a total of 10 damage (6 for the stone sword 3 for the critical hits 50% bonus and 1 added on as the added heart of damage at the end.) But every time I tested it I only did 9 damage, it only did the stones swords damage plus the 50% bonus from doing a critical hit.
Next I decided to see if it rounded down the damage if it wasn't a full point worth of damage. I tested this out with a wooden sword, if the wiki was correct the wooden sword should do 5 damage from the sword + 2.5 damage from the critical hit and be rounded down to 7 damage. But when I tested it every time I used the sword and checked the my statistics the total damage that I've done went up by 7.5 damage, which meant that the stats didn't round it down.
My first thought was that maybe it just says that I'm doing 7.5 damage but the monsters are only taking 7 damage, so I decided to do some tests on monsters. I figured I would try it out on a skeleton since they have 20 health, I decided to do 2 critical hits and a normal hit on it.If the damage was rounded down I would only do 7 damage for each critical and 5 damage for the normal hit for a total of 19 damage which would mean that the skeleton would still be alive. When I tested it though the skeleton died every time which meant that the damage wasn't being rounded down, it also means that monsters keep track of damage done to them even if it's less than half a heart of damage.
Now that we have the explanation about critical hits finished let's add their boost to the strength potion bonus. We'll use a wooden sword again, the wooden sword has 5 base damage add on 13 because of the strength potion and you have 18, next you take the 18 damage and add another 50% because of the critical hit which puts you up to 27 damage total. That's enough damage to kill most of the mobs in the game, the things that it can't 1 hit kill are endermen, large magma cubes (because of the armor),iron golems, horses with very high health, and the two bosses.
Now at this point you might be thinking that with sharpness V on your diamond sword you would do the 14.25 damage plus 260% from strength (37.05) and the 50% from criticals (25.65) for a total of 76.95 damage but you'd be wrong. Things like sharpness, smite and bane of arthropods are added on at the end after all of the calculations, so instead you would do 8 from the sword + 20.8 from strength +14.4 from critical for a total of 43.2 damage before adding sharpness on. (Enough to 1 hit kill any normal mob other than iron golems and the two bosses. If you add the bonus from sharpness V to that you do 49.45 damage, which doesn't change much you still 1 hit kill everything except the threes things previously listed.
It doesn't even make it take less hits to kill and iron golem, takes 3 hits whether or not you have sharpness on the sword. It might help a little on the wither, but not much. It takes 12 normal hits with an unenchanted sword to kill the wither vs the 10 of a sharpness V sword, or 9 critical hits with a normal sword vs the 8 of the sharpness V sword.
Sorry about how unorganized the post is, I made it while I was testing out all of these things. If I made any mistakes somewhere please tell me about it so that I can fix it. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll try to explain it the best that I can. -

ScottishMushroom posted a message on Please I want to find THIS Zombie! All these guys are telling you really useful and 100% effective ways to get rid of the zombie, but they don't tell you how to stop it coming back. Since you've dug all around your house looking for this zombie, Chances are he's not underground, but above it. I'm 90% sure that that zombie is in your house somewhere, or in a building close by. Are there any small areas in your house that you've forgotten to light? Do you have a dark area somewhere in your house that you keep dark and don't visit often? Do you have any creeper holes that you've covered over, but haven't filled in? Do you have an attic in your roof that is left unattended and unlit?Posted in: Survival Mode
I suggest you go around your house searching for small unlit nooks and crannies that a zombie could spawn in. Forgotten rooms and rooms that you think a zombie wouldn't spawn are the best suspects. I had a similar experience where I had a room full of doors, completely sealed off, that I used for bolstering my villager population. A zombie spawned in there, and I couldn't figure out where it was. I dug all around the building and couldn't find it. Then I remembered that I left that room of doors unlit. A dead zombie and a couple strategically placed blocks of glowstone later, I had the zombie dealt with and made sure he wasn't coming back.

Kythan posted a message on what do u think about griefersI can't post what I really think about griefers because it would probably violate the forum rules, not to mention various local, state, and national laws.Posted in: Discussion
The printable equivalent is that people who get their jollies from making other people unhappy, and who can't be happy unless someone else is miserable -- that is, griefers -- are the kind of sociopaths who would not only take candy from a baby, they'd throw it in the mud, too, just to make the baby cry, then laugh. Outside of a gaming environment, it is not decency or empathy that keeps them from behaving like the malicious vandals they are, only fear of the consequences of getting caught.

Well, actually and for practical purposes I just want to mention that 1x3 shaft with ladder in one column, waterfall in other and central column filled has always seemed good enough for me. Easy to set up and utilize, cheap and safe. Upgoing is bit slow, but beats staircase.Posted in: Survival Mode -

If you are a few thousand blocks away from 0,0 you might need to trek back towards your spawn to reach one of the strongholds, but you likely won't have to go all the way back to spawn. -

IronMagus posted a message on Mob spawning distance.Don't you love living in the future as we do? Isn't it grand? We have personal computers, and high-speed internet installed in cars and coffee bars, even on our cordless cellular telephones, which are small enough to carry around in our pockets. And now there's even this thing called "the wiki" which has the answers to almost all of our questions.Posted in: Survival Mode
...yet somehow we still choose to post said questions to the forum anyway, instead of looking up the answers for ourselves.
http://www.minecraft....net/wiki/Spawn
http://www.minecraft...wn#Mob_spawning
Mobs spawn naturally within a 15x15 chunk (240x240 block) area around the player. When there are multiple players, mobs can spawn within this distance of any of them. However, mobs that move farther than 128 blocks from any player will immediately despawn, so the mob spawning area is effectively limited to spheres with a radius of 128 blocks, centered at each player.

Not that bad of an idea if you throw a splash potion of fire resistance on it first and have your route planned so you won't accidentally jump off large cliffs.

will list all entities within range. may be necessary for useful results if you're near an ocean. If you can have someone else connect, using spectator mode is also great for watching whether mobs are spawning and then getting stuck.

As for the "behind a wall" thing, I think what happens there is that for whatever reason when it comes time to actually place a room into the chunk it doesn't get done. I was recently looking around the Stronghold in my world with Spectator mode and it's fairly obvious that an area "behind a wall" should have been reached by large-size room that's just missing.

Rather than these forums, the best place to post this information is in the bug tracker (probably in MC-71078). Please do so!

1.8 was released September 2, 2014; that's only about 4 weeks ago, not 6. Meanwhile there has been some info: some bugs have been closed as "Future Version - 1.8.x" (and some closed as "Far Future Version - 1.9+") and there have been a few posts on Twitter about stuff being worked on.
Seriously, you're being paranoid. Look at history: 1.7.2 was released October 25, 2013, and the next snapshot was 13w47a on November 21, 2013. 1.7.4 was released December 10, 2013, and the next snapshot was 14w02a on January 9, 2014.
