Also, I like to be able to monitor my own voice while also hearing other people, as well as game volume, through Skype (this is what I am currently doing). If a headphone output on a preamp would allow this, then I would definitely prefer for one to be there. I don't necessarily need to be able to adjust the monitor level separately from the input level, but I'd just like to be able to hear the adjusted sound through my headphones.

Sorry if any of this sounds funny. I have an idea of what this stuff is about and how it all works, but I certainly don't know how it all works or what way is the best way to connect things (etc...). So please bear with me :P Thanks.

What exactly are you using to convert it from XLR to USB? your problem may well lie in that device

I am using a Creative X-Fi Go Pro USB sound card. It has a 3.5mm input and output. I have tried going straight from XLR to my computer's 3.5mm (combo) jack, but for unknown reasons, it wouldn't work. That's why I ended up getting the USB sound card. However that is a whole other story and not the topic here. The only other conversion from the mic's XLR connection is simply an XLR to USB cable, but I'm not sure that would solve the issue.

Also, keep in mind I'm not an expert, but I don't know that this is really even a "problem." I think it may just be that the SM57 needs a preamp to get its full potential. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Hello all, I have a question. I have a Shure SM57 mic that I hope to use for some videos/recording. With the mic boost software options in Windows, my mic is bearable to others when I Skype, but I have to be very close to it (an inch or less). I have a USB sound card that I use it with as well. I've come to realize that a preamp could be the solution to the low volume.

The question is, what preamps are out there for an affordable price? The only thing I request is that it connects via USB and has an adjustable input level/gain. All I really need, other than that, is something that just works. I really don't need 4 inputs or anything too fancy. Obviously the more features the better, but this stuff isn't necessary, especially if it will increase the price too much.

Can anyone recommend a basic preamp that will work for me? I've checked out a few but I'm just not sure what's best for the money. I'm hoping to stay under $50, which I realize is not much at all, but this will really be used mainly for Skype, as well as the occasional recording here and there. Buying used from eBay is not out of the question either.

    Thanks

I don't know what Skyblock is, and I'm struggling myself trying to get a Pigman Farm going (doing mine in the Nether). But one thing I found which may help - when I used signs the Pigmen didn't fall through (no idea why - they should have). So I changed to open trapdoors, and they fall through those. Don't know if this is of any help.

Server. Note that he can't access Nether. Anyway, how often do you actually get pigmen? Try trapdoors instead, like what the above said. Also, for seperating pigmen and baby, you can just add a 2 wide tunnel with water at a cornor, with 1 block holes on the side. If theres a baby, it ill go through it.

After letting run for a while longer, I found that the signs are working, but the spawn rate is just very slow. I have actually modified the ending bit where they were supposed to drown. I extended the water elevator quite a bit and instead of falling into a pool of water, I've decided to have them fall 24 blocks to die from fall damage. Seems to work okay at the moment.

As for the little ones, are you saying to dig out a 1 block hole at the bottom of the water elevator, and then have them just flow to my collection point (and kill them manually)? That doesn't seem like a bad idea, if I can get it to work right. Not sure if this is what you meant though.

I have a question, how did you get all that obsidian?
The server I'm on has not only a default server shop, but also player-driven auctions (as well as just trying to find someone in chat to sell your items to). Players can sell their obsidian to others. However, I have seen some people with an "obsidian generator", if you will, which sacrifices one redstone dust to be converted to obsidian. There are tutorials around the internet if you wish to use it.

posted a message on Skyblock - Pigman Farm?
Hello all, I am playing Skyblock and I am trying to create a zombie pigman/gold farm in the overworld (no access to the nether). I initially thought that if I place signs on the edges of the bases of the obsidian portals that the pigmen would spawn on the obsidian, walk onto the sign, and off into the water.

After they drop into the water, they are to flow to a central area where all of my portals connect. Then they should move on to a 2 block water elevator.

After reaching the top, they are to flow 7 blocks until the water stream ends,

and then fall down a short drop into a 3 block high water hole, so they drown.

Finally, after dying, the drops should simply flow over to this hopper, which eventually leads into a chest.

My issue is this: will the pigmen even spawn given the layout I have with the signs? If not, how can I easily adjust this setup so it does work?

Also, and this isn't as important, but the water elevator doesn't work with baby pigmen. What's a simple way of compensating for both regular and small pigmen?

posted a message on Mic Not Working on Laptop - I'm Desperate!
I have a Turtle Beach X11 headset which as a mic, headphone, and USB connection (USB to power the in-line controls and the mic I assume). If I plug in the USB cable from the headset, as well as plug in the mic and headphone cables into the appropriate ports on the splitter, then this connection does work. I did notice that the mic input from the headset is a 2 ring/3-pin connection. Does this mean that, for my SM57 to work, that I need an XLR to 3.5mm 3-pin cable, instead of mine being 2-pin? I still don't quite understand why 2-pin vs 3-pin would be making such a difference as to not allowing my other mic to work. Or does the Turtle Beach work because it is USB powered?

I guess this could be a temporary solution, but I would really love to use my SM-57 with my ATH-M50s because, well, they are both of much higher quality in performing their functions, in my opinion.

Seriously any help at all... and I mean at all, is welcome. Whatever you got... let me hear it. Thanks.

I'm not sure how much you want to/can spend, but if your budget is seriously limited, then according to my limited knowledge of combo jacks, that splitter cable should work. I'm not aware of there being multiple types of combo jacks, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong there.

That's what I thought, but I can't seem to figure out why it isn't working. You'd think Acer support would know, but it sounded like he didn't really understand me or know what he was talking about...

Anyone who knows anything about computers, please stick with me... I'm desperate.

My laptop is an Acer M5-481PT-6644 with a combo jack. I have a Sure SM-57 dynamic microphone (to convert the XLR connection, I have an XLR to 3.5mm cable. The 3.5mm end is a 2 pin connection). and Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones. Basically, I just want to record through the mic while being able to listen to, say, game volume through the headphones. I purchased a combo jack splitter from Extrasensory Devices (Link Removed). This splitter works on my phone (Galaxy S4), but not on my laptop.

I talked to their support. He was extremely fast and helpful, but he simply didn't know what to do. It's not a problem with his product, so I don't blame him. Then, I talked to Acer support, who were fairly confusing. The guy, after 2 hours, basically said that the combo jack on the laptop vs the one on the phone were different, so it should work on the phone and not the laptop. I think he said that this would work - http://amzn.to/19hN80h. This looks similar however, and I honestly don't think it would work.

What will work for me? I have a couple options left, as far as I know. I want something cheap, and if a bit of sound quality is lost, then oh well. Not a big deal.

    USB sound card
    Link Removed
    or Link Removed

    XLR to USB cable
    Link Removed

What looks best here? Obviously the USB sound card provides more options, but I don't know if any of these three options will even work. Would I need anything else in particular to make this setup work?

Thanks for your time and help.

In general, a lot of the basic concepts of each language will apply to both Java and VB and a good programmer should be able to pick up most languages with ease after learning another.

Is there anything wrong with learning both at once? They're both year-long classes so they will be going on at the same time.

posted a message on New to Programming... Any Tips?
Hey all, I am currently in high school and plan on taking a couple classes to help get started with programming. My school offers a computer science class (Java) and something called "game and simulation programming" which I believe is visual basic, and I will likely be taking both. For background, I am going to be a senior next year and have never done anything with programming before. I wish I could ask you all if I will enjoy it, as not enjoying it is my biggest fear, but I unfortunately can't do that. I really do hope I enjoy it, but the only way to find out is by trying. I absolutely love technology and computers and love using them, and if I do enjoy programming I would consider it a possibility for my future, college and on.

Will it be more beneficial or harmful to take the two different classes at once? And the main question, are there any pro tips out there that I should know about or remember, considering I'm going into this without any prior knowledge?

posted a message on The Point of a Touchscreen Laptop
The only reason mine has one, despite the fact that they are more expensive than a similar laptop without a touchscreen, is because I was able to get it for a steal and liked everything else it had to offer. In no way was I shopping around and turning my head on those with/without one. So I guess it's not really a deal breaker for me either way, however if I did have the choice between two similar laptops, but one has a touchscreen and one doesn't, if they were the same price I'd take the touchscreen ('cause why not?), but if there was a fair price difference between them, then I'd go with none.

And for the record, I am running Windows 8 with my laptop and it's pretty cool, but that's really it. It doesn't seem extremely practical to me, but it can be useful in some situations.

Every computer is different than the next and handles games like Minecraft in different ways, depending on its internals. Unfortunately, being on an old laptop, you most likely can't physically upgrade much on the inside. And again, being an old laptop, it's probably just time to get a new laptop, or a better desktop.
