posted a message on Atmospheric Music
So, for the past few days I have been listening to Music out of the Diablo and Warcraft series (the ambient music), and it got me thinking... just how much work goes into creating the perfect music for a particular zone? What elements are essential to pulling a player into the mindset of the particular region they are in or the task they are attempting to complete? How does the music effect how you perceive your current situation?

Let me share with you one of my favorite pieces of music of all time, the dungeon music for the first few levels of Diablo I:

Now, those of you who have played Diablo I before, how did this music set the mood and tone for you in the zone? This music always put me a little on edge and I felt as if I always had to be extra careful. Like their could be a creature lurking around the corner ready to snuff the life out of my character. Since the first days of Diablo I, I have yet to find music that has pulled me into such a mood so consistently.

But I want to know what you think. What pieces of music have breathed life (or death) into a particular zone or event? Could you tell me how it made you feel? Do you just not notice the music rolling in the background? Do share clips of the music, if you can. I would love to hear what you have!

posted a message on Your Top 10 Favorite Games
Well... here is my list of favorite video games of all times. Some of them I still play, others I can no longer play for one reason or another. It may be important to note that all of these games are played on a Mac/PC and not a console, so I tend towards games that are more popular on this platform and not games such as Call of Duty. That aside... I must say that I truly hope I can, one day, play a game like Realmz again. It has not been ported to OSX as far as I know and was never able to get it working on my Windows 7 machine.

I personally recommend DropBox (https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTIyNTMyOTA5?src=global0 Using a referral link will give both users 250mb on top of the baseline 1gb), though you can use other services such as PhotoBucket (low bandwidth, so I don't recommend them) or Imageshack. You could also use BayImg...

If you use DropBox, you can share pictures in one of a few ways. One way would be to save them all in a folder in the Photos directory in your DropBox folder, and then share a link like this! http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/2253290/1/Desktops?h=3afc36

Or you could save them all in your Public folder and share links individually like this!
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2253290/Tutorials/MacMinecraftCommandFiles.png

Of course, the second method isn't limited to pictures, though the first method is preferable due to the nice gallery setup that it creates. But that's just me.

No McAdmin here and I'm running just fine.

Also, why even continue to use McAdmin with all the other great software out there that isn't made by unstable developers? :tongue.gif:

Jesus christ, let it go man, he's human and made a mistake, corrected it, and even made his **** open source.

And I use McAdmin and a plain hMod server, and my McAdmin isn't working right now. But I believe it has something to do on my end. Something about a Error occurred during initialization of Virtual Machine, and could not reserve enough space for object heap.

Many will never -ever- "let it go"

I will not run McAdmin ever again.

And that's their right. I must agree with Potato on this though, but this is not the place for such a discussion, since it is wholly off topic.

Anyway, I use MCAdmin and my server is working correctly. I believe that Colin is correct in the assessment that you are extrapolating too much without enough information.

posted a message on Creeper Explosion Hurting Player Causes Connection Reset
I was playing a few minutes ago with monsters enabled (after setting fire to a nearby forest so they wouldn't get into the castle area by jumping up the trees...), I ran into a creeper (this happened twice in the same area... tons of creepers). He exploded on me, causing me to instantly lose connection. When I reconnected, I saw the destruction of the creeper, but I had lost no health and all of my stuff was fine. The same situation happened a few moments later. After the first death, I started having stuttering sound... damn Creepers... :SSSS:

Does anyone have any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone else? At time of writing, I am using the most recent version of the server (0.2.8) as well as the latest version of the client (1.2.6). In the mod department, I am using Runecraft 2.3.1. I am using MCAdmin r224 as my server wrapper, which you can see from the log...

posted a message on What does this java error mean?
More simply, Minecraft is attempting to access some piece of information that does not exist. To address this problem, you will want to make sure any mods you have installed are up to date! If you still have problems, try starting with a new copy of the server software and slowly install mods until you get a similar crash. Then simply put that mod aside (after uninstalling, of course) and continue through your mods until you have found the mods that are causing trouble.

Using what Nick said, for a more technical basis, Minecraft is attempting to access something at location 20 of an array which we will call Stuff. Stuff was initialized with with a range of 0 to 15, thus calling Stuff[0] all the way up to Stuff[15] will work, but trying to call Stuff[-1], Stuff[16] or Stuff[20] (or, really, anything outside that little range) will give you an index out of bounds error. The variable inside the brackets (Ex. Stuff[x]) is the index, and the bounds are 0-15.

...I should get some sleep or something... :Zombie:

posted a message on Cannot connect to any servers >.<
Well, first thing you should check is if Java is allowed through any firewalls present on your computer as well as any present on your router. This might be a problem if you are at college. If you know for sure that you can get through these firewalls, you'll want to make sure that you have the ip address correct and that the server is also running at the time of connection. Furthermore, some servers use alternate port numbers for various reasons (I ran two servers off the same computer; one SMP and one Classic), so make sure that you put in the port number! If you don't, I believe it goes with the standard 25565.

Note that the "IP" can be something like:
    ambersmpserver.student.rit.edu:25570
    or
    289.561.52.15:25570
Neither of these are point to my server. They are just examples. Use whichever you are provided with. If you happen to have some trouble with the first format (like a few of my players do), let the admin know that you cannot connect via that method and ask for the IP

If that doesn't help, we can go from there. If you would like, I'll let you connect to my server which I know works fully right now. If you can connect to me but not other people... well... stuff! :Zombie:

ok im sorry if i wasnt clear enough before, i need the origanal so i can edit it and claim it as my own (and maybe enter in contest thing)

I'm pretty sure you can't do that. I'm not positive, but I don't think the original textures are free for use. If they are, chances are you would have to cite Notch as the original creator and only yourself for modifications. It would be best for you to look at a template before starting from scratch.

I'm no expert on that though... so yea. :Zombie:

im just looking for the deafult minecraft halloween texture pack that has the haloween stuff such as blood rock and so on (also i need it for mac)

Hmh... I'll take a look around, but I personally suggest http://painterlypack.net/. If you use the customizer, you will be able to get a more Halloween styled pack. To install it on a Mac, move Minecraft.app into a folder ('Minecraft' in 'Applications' works). Then, move the contents of 'skin' into the 'Minecraft' folder. It should look something like this.

Firstly... this is a forum, not an instant messaging service. Thus, there is no need to put the title in CAPS or run on sentences. You have the time to type out a proper question.

Secondly, what texture pack are you referring to specifically? Pictures are always helpful.

I'm not going to make a major statement or anything here... While I do feel a bit betrayed by you, Doridian, I understand the draw to power and how it corrupts. You developed an amazing piece of software which I used, and when I get back to running my server, will continue to use. That aside, your actions in this matter were unethical, which has put a mar on your name in my book.

That aside, I can say that I truly respect you a bit more now for admitting your mistake and exposing yourself to the community. Yes, it will definitely take time to regain a good name for yourself, but sometimes it takes a mistake to truly learn the difference between right and wrong. Sometimes, it is just better to learn the hard way.

This is our current map. I don't really want to resize it right now, so here is a link. Due to school starting up, we haven't had a ton of time to work on it. We have one fairly experienced builder (I think you can guess who that one is by the location of a certain small city) and some more novice builders (myself included). In total, we have 5 players, all building off in their own direction. We intend to switch to a more public server down the line, though sticking the the RP idea.

posted a message on Classic Server Question
I had a quick question on hosting a Classic/Creative server. I have been running it at my home quite easily for quite some time, but I recently moved to a new school (Rochester Institute of Technology) and I'd like to continue hosting my server, just without using my external IP. Now... what I mean is that I wish to use something that the school provides to students (which is essentially a link to one's IP... I think).

Instead of using: 127.123.123.123 (clearly a fake IP)
I want to use: ambersclassicserver.rit.edu:12345 (also clearly fake)

    I already tried to do: http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?ip=am ... port=12345
    Instead of: http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?ip=12 ... port=12345

Naturally, it didn't work. If anyone understands what I'm shooting for, any suggestions?

posted a message on Can you use single player saves for SMP?
Not that it's terribly important to note... but I do not believe that single player winter maps can be used with the snow. Basically... when you load the map on the multiplayer server, none of the snow will load (not sure about ice though). Strangely, though... it is possible to have ice and snow spawned on a multiplayer map during generation, and this snow will -not- disappear.

And now that I've jumbled my words around and all that kinda stuff... I am off!
