-Do you have any prior roleplay-related experience, if so could you give an example? I have roleplayed on various Minecraft RP servers, including LotC before it changed to the new world. I have also played various tabletop roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons which I have played for about nine years now.
-Define Power-gaming in your own words: Power-gaming is when one acts in such a way that either A ) the character would be incapable of or B ) denies the opportunity to react against the action (ex: *Bob cuts off Bill's head*)
-Define Meta-gaming in your own words: Meta-gaming is using knowledge that your character does not/could not know (i.e. knowledge gained out-of-character).
-Character name: Mikael Johnathan Pelegia Traven VIII
-Character race: Human
-Character age: 23
-Character Occupation (optional, note you still must talk to the lord about loaning or purchasing any stall/shop for your character if he/she would have one. Also be sure to give previous applications a glance before deciding your job, we don't need 5 bartenders!): Mikael has some combat training, but he is primarily a scholar.
-Character description (At least one to two paragraphs describing your character’s visual appearance.): Mikael is of average height, standing at 5 feet 11 inches. He has dull-gray eyes and brown hair. He usually wears plainer clothes in browns and dark colours, though he will dress up for special occasions. He keeps his face well shaven and his hair short.
-Character personality and traits (At least one to two paragraphs describing their personality traits and/or quirks.): Mikael is often quiet and reserved though that doesn't mean he does not know what goes on around him. In fact he is quite aware of his surroundings, he just doesn't respond unless he feels as though there is a need to. He is not rude, however. If someone directly addresses him he will definitely respond. Perhaps one of his most odd quirks is the fact that he is almost always reading when not doing anything else (well, as long as he can find a book). If someone bothers him in the middle of reading without a good reason (in his eyes) then he can get quite annoyed.
-Character biography (At least three paragraphs describing your character's history and experiences): Mikael Johnathan Pelegia Traven VIII is the eighth child and fifth son of Baronet Mikael Johnathan Pelegia Traven III. Being born to a noble Mikael VIII was trained to be a knight; but being the eighth child he also didn't have to worry about
inheriting land, and therefore the more tedious points of noble life. During the time that he wasn't training as a knight (and often when he was supposed to be) he would study what books his family had in their library or go elsewhere to find other books that they didn't have. From these books he has learned much about the world and gained a fascination of magic.
Unfortunately Mikael VIII grew up during the war with the Pact and this overshadowed his life as the war came closer to his home. His father, older brothers and sisters all went to fight the pact and Mikael had many responsibilities thrust upon him all of a sudden. He was often stressed by this and sought much help from his mother who had more experience in running a noble household. Mikael would take any excuse he could to get away from many of those duties, though there were a few he didn't mind. The war also meant that Mikael could not go and study magic.
When Mikael VIII turned seventeen the Travens' received news that all of his family on the field had either perished in battle or gone missing. This news devastated the whole family, but their mother most of all. She became unresponsive and withdrawn, requiring more and more care. Three months later she also died. Once again the family grieved for the loss of a loved one and now the responsibilities of running the household fell squarely on Mikael's shoulders. Mikael did the best he could and got whatever help he could from friends and family. It was during this time he seriously considered going out to fight against the Pact, but by that time the war had all but been decided and it was time to leave his home. They naturally went to Barakmstead, fortunately for their family they had and Uncle in the city already who could take in the youngest kids and care for them. Mikael now turned to looking for work to help provide for his family and to improve their station.
-Please give us a short RP response to these two scenarios. (At least one paragraph for each):
You’re walking around the markets at around noon. There’s a lot of people around you, still gathering their items as they prepare to shut down their many stands. Suddenly you feel a gentle lifting of your coin purse as a child graces you and soon after they take off sprinting. You have been robbed.
I whirl around and try to get a good look at the thief, grinning to myself as I do. The thief may have gotten with one of my coin purses but being out on my own had taught me to always carry another purse somewhere less easy to get. Still, a thief is a thief. Unfortunately I had only caught a glimpse of the culprit from the back, not a very good description for finding him.
I shrug resignedly. There wasn't much I could do as I didn't have any way of finding or pursuing the thief as he -or she- was so small that they could manoeuvre through the crowd much more easily than I. I turned around again and continued on my business. The loss of the money was regrettable but replaceable; some things weren't.
You’re heading back to the city through the woods when you hear a whining coming from nearby. Upon further investigation you come across a grey-coloured wolf that appears to have its leg caught in a bear trap. Around it is three smaller lumps of fur, obviously puppies belonging to the trapped mother. Without help, they’ll all die, but wolf skins are quite valuable too, not to mention that the nearby farms suffer quite a bit from the wolf population.
I look down at the wolves and consider my options. If I were to kill them I would prefer it to be quick and not to let them suffer out here like this, but if I let them go free they could cause trouble for the farmers and others. I look at the wolves again and nod. My family and I could use the money from the skins and it would protect those around here from at least some of the wolves. I draw my sword and breath deeply. It had been a while since I had drawn it and it felt a bit heavy in hand. The mother wolf, having already been growling, becomes even more aggressive in response to my threatening stance. I advance carefully to just outside the mother's reach and then lunge at her, aiming for her head. She able to dodge me, though awkwardly due to the trap, and I stumble past her. She turns towards me as best she can with her leg in the trap and I turn also. I really do need more practice I think to myself and I ready myself again. I had gone for the head because it would cause less damage overall to the fur but it was a small target, in
comparison to the rest of the mother's body. I narrow my eyes and stumble back as a ball of fur leaps at me. One of the pups at least has enough strength and growth to at least try to fight back. I easily kick it away. I look at the mother again and rush suddenly,
slicing at her neck. I land a solid blow and the sword, which I do still keep sharp, goes into her neck. Her body goes limp and I feel a scratch on my leg. The pup that leapt at me is back and I pick it up by the scruff, take out a knife and finish it off. The other two pups are running now and I don't feel like chasing them. I'll still get a decent amount of money from these two. I look at the dead mother and pup and shake my head. I really didn't enjoy that, but my family could use the money. I sling the body of the mother around my shoulders and pick up the body of the pup, shivering a bit as some blood trickles onto my clothes, then I set for home.
-Magic Biography; Explain the reason you want your character to have magic through backstory application: Mikael Johnathan Pelegia Traven VIII is unusual compared to the rest of his family. Where his brothers practised tirelessly to become great fighters Mikael took to reading, writing and art. He still practised with the sword but he never became a great fighter, or even a good fighter really, against anyone who had been in a real fight he would've lost. It was quite a while before he learned of his magical potential. He had been studying some family heirlooms and his mind began to wander and he thought about magic. Hear heard an odd sound and opened eyes and to his amazement (and a bit of dismay, but the amazement was definitely more strong) his notes on the heirlooms were covered in a sheet of ice.
Excited and confused Mikael went to his parents to ask if they had any idea. His father reluctantly acknowledged that they had known that he had some magical potential, but he had kept it hidden from him because he wanted him to grow up “a proper noble”. When he was born Mikael's eyes had been the green of his mother's but as he grew they started turning gray. Mikael had been too young to remember this and he only had significant interaction with a few of his siblings who were also young then. Mikael tried to learn all he could about magic from the books that hisfamily had. Unfortunately the books were lacking and focused on stories that, while interesting, provided little insight to actually using magic.
Mikael practiced as much as he could, but one thing he did know about magic is that it could be dangerous. Almost all the books he had read had emphasized this, usually through some rash person who ended up blowing themselves up. He also had less time to practice as the war raged on and he had to take on more responsibility. Due to all this he still knows very little about magic and seeks to learn more.
((My more specific reasoning for Mikael's magical ability is because he actually did have an ancestor who was capable of magic. But genetics and magic are weird and he is the first to manifest the ability in his family for while.))
-Please give an example in your own words describing the limitations placed upon those who use magic (This should be at least one well-crafted paragraph): Magic is like exercising, except much more risky. When you exercise you risk overexerting and hurting yourself, whether it be minor or major. In much the same way overexerting yourself magically could hurt your physical or mental health, not to mention you might blow up your artifact if you channel too much, or outright kill you. Depending on proficiency and level of artifact you can only do so much magic. A beginner user of magic isn't going to be able to create giant infernos of fire with a stronger artifact (though how they would get their hands on that is anyone's guess).
-Please give a description of the magic system in your own words: Magic is used by channeling magical energy through artifacts to achieve your desired effect. Depending on the artifact it can do certain things, like a weak trinket of water splashing a drop of water on someone or spilling some water out of a cup. The higher level of the artifact the more powerful effects can be achieved, depending on your own character' proficiency with magic.
-You are given a weak trinket of ice, you haven't had much practice with magic yet, but you will try your best. Describe some things you could/would do with this trinket: I could probably create small sheets of ice, help cool down things as long as they aren't too hot (or too large), make basic shapes (cube, pyramid, etc.). Little things that might entertain and impress a child or someone without contact with magic, but would be underwhelming to most other people.
