What if the Nether could corrupt?
The idea is that either, you build a Nether portal and it will start to corrupt the land around it, or there is 1 naturally spawned Nether portal in the world and it will start corrupting from the start of a new map. I figured maybe a few new blocks might be added such as corrupted trees and plants. Maybe one mob or two. And some AI changes making animals run from the Corrupted Nether ground.

And when the corruption reaches about 100x100 blocks, Nether structures will start to be built. And yes eventually Ghasts (hopefully they wont just fly away and there will be a way to keep them within the Corrupted area)
Of course new mobs might have to be made to build the Nether structures or maybe just leave it to the Zombie Pigmen, who knows. Maybe add a New Hostile mob who will build it.
Lastly i guess destroying the Nether Portal will stop to Corruption from spreading but i don't think it should disappear over time, much like leaving the land scared from it's existence.
I guess some of these can come from other mods such as the bacteria mod if you can find it. Slow down the spreading effect... drastically to allow a steady spread effect of Nether Corruption.
The Builder type mods to allow a Mob to construct Nether structures.
and as far as getting animals to run away from corruption? I believe in the upcoming 1.2 update there is a new AI installment in creepers making them run away from cats? (don't quote me on this i might be horribly misinformed) so install that AI into (neutral) mobs to react that way to Nether materials?
Oh and with changing trees i guess you can use the script they have in game when water touches lava it turns to stone or obsidian, so to when trees touch Nether material they chance into... Corrupted Trees? and plants?
Well let me know what you think... And no... i have no idea how to make my own mod. This is just an idea =] If enough people like it maybe a nice (great) modder will come along and offer to make this into a mod...

Make a new block called Netherspawn and code it to destroy itself in rain. At midnight run a check and spread it outwards from itself until it is MAX_DISTANCE from the portal. If it rains it destroys the Netherspawn leaving a crater.
netherspawn.create()
// change the blocks underneath the nethergate to netherspawn
This function would have to be hooked in the portal activation function I would assume
netherspawn.spread()
// Check surrounding blocks
// check if in range of a nether portal if so then
..// if neighbor.block is dirt or stone or sand or sandstone then set neighbor.block to netherspawn (this spares ores and mod blocks)
Put this on a periodic check
netherspawn.destruction()
// Check if it is raining on the block

// if neighbor block is not netherspawn AND is not Air then set neighbor block to Obsidian
// delete this block of netherspawn
You would need to hook this into the function that handles rain or put it on a periodic check.
That style of function should get you what you want. You could then just add more conversion blocks to flip
e.g. if block is wood then set to corruptWood, if block is leaves then set to corruptLeaves... etc...
