I tested these out and heres what I found:
Summary: 1 seems to be true. 2 seems to be false, no changes to the texture result in a significant FPS improvement.
Long version:
Results + interpretations:
Alone:
- In full UNenchanted diamond armour with UNenchanted sword: FPS = 92 - 98
- In full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword: FPS = 82 - 92
Interpretation: The FPS difference is not much, arguable it's due to random error. If nothing else, wearing full enchanted diamond gear likely will have a negligible impact on FPS. If there is a subtle impact, it may cause FPS loss.
With LOTS of zombie helpers:
- I'm wearing full UNenchanted diamond armour with UNenchanted sword. The 180 zombies are wearing In full UNenchanted diamond armour with UNenchanted sword. Default Glint file being used. : FPS = 89 - 97
- I'm wearing full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. The 180 zombies are wearing In full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. Default Glint file being used. : FPS = 35 - 39
- I'm wearing full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. The 179 zombies are wearing In full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. 2x2 Glint file being used. : FPS = 35 - 38
- I'm wearing full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. The 179 zombies are wearing In full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. 1x1 White Glint file being used. : FPS = 38 - 41
- I'm wearing full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. The 178 zombies are wearing In full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. 1x1 Black Glint file being used. : FPS = 36 - 42
- I'm wearing full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. The 178 zombies are wearing In full enchanted diamond armour with enchanted sword. 1x1 Alpha Glint file being used. : FPS = 33 - 36
Interpretation: Large FPS loss seems to be caused by having 178+ zombies wearing enchanted gear. The default glint file, a 2x2 glint file, a 1x1 white glint file, a 1x1 black glint file and a 1x1 alpha glint file all yield similar FPS. It seems that changing the glint texture will NOT decrease FPS drops caused by enchanted gear. 180 zombies wearing UNenchanted gear did not have an extremely negative effect on FPS, however they still did reduce FPS. In conclusion, the less enchanted gear that is nearby, the better the frame rate.

Method:
The solo test was undergone on a pillar at the upper build limit of a minecraft world. The day/night cycle was disabled. A focus point was used (a corner was designated the focal point and I put the player character on a different corner. I left the crosshairs on the focal point and I did not move the player character)

Supposedly, the issue has been fixed in 1.8, if you want to test it in that version.
My computer specs:
Minecraft 1.6.2, mac book air early 2014, 8gb ram, Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB, Java Version 8 Update 25, os x maverick. Using optifine + forge. No additional mods.
Interpretation: on a different computer, perhaps there will be different results. I personally expect that the same general trend will apply.

The game has been out so long and people have gotten so used to it that if changed, they will probably rage. Should of been changed long ago. At the same time though I could care less, there's other things I think need worked on first. *cough* Brittle boats..wait ...shouldn't of coughed it broke my boat
