This is exactly right. I don't know if you are familiar with the "10,000 rule" (from the book Outliers which is worth a read). But the general principle is that anyone can become a master in a chosen field after doing it for 10,000 hours. While this is pretty extreme in the case of Minecraft, the general principle behind it being the more you do something the better you become holds true.
Don't be disheartened by not reaching expertise instantly, just try and see each failure as a lesson to be learnt. If someone killed you, just think how it was they killed you and try and improve on that the next time.
Its not that extreme with minecraft. Gather lots of caffine and Just play for 416 days and 17 hours straight.
