So I paid money for a gift code from Gamefanshop. I have a paid server and everything. Now my account is marked as not premium and I am left with a big FU in the help section that said Minecraft does not support any outside sites. Just a fair warning to anyone out there gamefanshop is bogus.

That was a dumb idea. It's like going to craigslist for a copy of TOR.
    Quote from raditz5

I will simply cancel my sever and pirate the game from now on because this is BS.

Yes, punish the developer for your error, that makes perfect sense.

I'll say this. Piracy is a POTENTIAL lost in sells. Not a guarantee. Just because some pirated a game, in this case minecraft. If the pirated never intended on buy the game in the first place, than notch didn't lose 27 dollars It's the same as if the pirate didn't pirate minecraft, but never bought the game. Most pirate will buy the game anyway, I know I did. Personally, I can see piracy being used solely as for demoing a game. Yea they're are demos, but most demos do let you actually enjoy the game. Some due, but most are jipped. The ones that have good demos are worth the buy, like Just Cause 2.

What about people who don't buy it later? Why would you buy it later if you already have the game?
While developers should provide a demo version, they're not required to.
    Quote from Sodisna

Yea, you can never justify stealing, but don't just call them evil or selfish. Only the ones who think companies doesn't deserve money are the selfish, jerkish pirates. Notch gave us a great product. 27$ is quite cheap. If was developed by someone liek EA, this would be twice as expensive and have brown bloom everywhere.

I've noticed that most pirates are very selfish; they expect the game to be made the way they want, they won't give anything in return, and then they get pissed when the developer tries to enforce their rights to their work.(/v/, holy ****, what a bunch of arrogant/selfish assholes they are... :sleep.gif: )
    Quote from hakata

Cracked players make me sick... I mean this has to be one of the most popular games on the internet, and the creators deserve the money more than most companies. This is an indie developer, they're not some huge company like Bethesda. There is more love put into MC then a lot of games.

    Quote from hakata

They still worked hard to make the game.
The least the deserve is some money to make a living and continue development.

These two statements contradict each other. Are you implying that Bethesda/other companies don't work hard on a game, or that they don't deserve compensation for their work? How does one measure if a developer loves their work?

I myself live in Pakistan and athough im of middle income, its impossibe for my parents to own a credit card(Paypal is also banned in Pk.). Just few banks offer cards after a hefty procedure. Thus, I ended up searching a 'free MC download' on youtube.
I feel no shame in doing this since this is simply my passion. IF you pple can play it, Do i not deserve it too?

Are there any other online payment services in Pakistan that you could use?
Offering more ways to pay is something that developers can do the reduce piracy, but it's kind of unreasonable to expect the developer to take into account what services are available in every country. Tell Mojang/other developers about any alternative services that you can use; then it's up to them to offer those services as a payment option.

    Quote from layzrfyzt

It's not the creator's fault he's a ****ING millionaire who can afford to miss $27 here or there, either.
Also, work on your grammar just a bit.

What about every other developer that isn't already rich? What about minecraft, before it sold so many copies? People still pirated it then.
What about the humble bundle? They allow you to pay one cent and have it go to charity, but it still got pirated at least 25% of the time. Can anyone offer an explanation as to why this happened? (The average might be ~50%, but >25% is still significant)

This doesn't make any sense. Is it also ok to steal goods from a walmart, since that company has over 1 million dollars?
If there is some limit on how much a developer can make, what is that limit? Who gets to decide what that limit is?

    Impressive, you made these yourself?

Yeah, and I didn't need to mod anything since this is possible with the attach to script. :biggrin.gif:
It has 3 artillery pieces, 6 missile launchers, and 13 AA guns, its only vulnerability is having the osprey carrying it destroyed.

So I've been working on an idea in Arma 2.... flying battleships. :laugh.gif:
They're very effective against pretty much everything, and bots can control them. Any other ideas on what to add to them?

I still need to come up with a way for players to get on/off the guns on top. I guess I'll do that next.

Edit: Just added a dock for it, now it can be boarded too!

If the developer can't offer any sort of added value to purchased copies then it's very likely a negative potential. However, if the product is particularly impressive(and so future productions are desirable) or if there is some added value for purchasing the product then your piracy problem just turned into free advertising.

So the developer has to (in addition to making the game/other app) add something that gives 'added value' to get people to pay? Why do you feel entitled to the game/other app? (without those added features that require a purchase) Why should the developer not be paid for the game/app in the first place?

This also creates a couple of problems. What features are going to be used to convince people to pay that shouldn't be present in the app normally, and what advantage is there to requiring an internet connection for the authentication that would be required?

Piracy is not theft, it's copyright infringement.
I was just about to point that out.
    Quote from b2zeldafreak

Anyone equating piracy to stilling is either stupid or incredibly uninformed.

While copyright infringement is not the same thing as theft, it can be equated to it.
Here's the reasons that I'd heard of, they're very similar to theft.

"I'm copying it, not removing the original"
The idea about how this is theft does come from the copy being made, but the fact that they haven't been compensated in any way for the work. That's the point of the licensing, you pay for a license to have a copy of the work.

"I wasn't gonna buy it anyway"
Just as a thief wasn't going to buy anything from the store they rob.

"I just want to try it first"
While I think developers should provide a demo version to test if the game works and for the player to see if they'd like it, they are not required to. Taking the full version to 'try it' doesn't make sense, since at that point there's no obligation to pay.

    "It has DRM"
DRM was created as a response to all the pirating, just like how security cameras/locks/safes/etc. were created in response to theft. It's the developers' attempt at securing their rights as copyright holders.
If people actually paid for the games, developers wouldn't waste time writing DRM.

"Information wants to be free"(open-source movement related)
This isn't justifiable since the developer decided to make the work proprietary, and this is one of the rights that they have. If they wanted it to be open-source, they would have make it that way.

See why it's essentially the same thing as theft?

(His idea is to provide features that are only available to paying players that connect to a server.)

This causes a couple of problems, they require an internet connection at all times in order to play the full game, and it gives the game a lifespan, where after that authentication server is taken offline, the features that require authentication will never work again.(Or in the worst case, the game will be completely un-playable.)

This is a better alternative to before piracy became an issue?
I can still play my copy of command & conquer (yeah, made in 1995) without any problems, since it's DRM was to enter the serial key on install. It doesn't ask to authenticate before playing to get all the features it offers.(and yes, I do still play it sometimes :tongue.gif: )

What about everything else? Is it a better idea to require authentication for every app you use? What happens if you can't remove any extra feature from the app? How would the average indie developer be able to afford server hosting for a authentication server? What should the app do if there's no internet connection?

I got an idea(and one with a practical use too!)
In Anno 2070, you have to place farms and stuff with fields, each field is a certain size. They all have to be connected by road to a warehouse.
The challenge should be to have the app arrange these buildings/fields/roads/warehouses in the most space efficient way, while minimizing wasted space.

    Anyone up for this? :biggrin.gif:

Oh well, I guess it couldn't hurt to tell(but then I can't see the surprised reactions :tongue.gif: )
The plugin attempts to emulate tiberium from C&C as closely as possible(within technical limitations).
Diamond ore spreads over other blocks, and kills players/animals that walk over it(by burning them). Wearing armor will temporarily shield you from it.
The tiberium charges creepers, and turns spiders into cave spiders. Dying from tiberium will turn you into a zombie.
While the world is being turned into tiberium, the diamonds can be smelted into almost anything else(although very inefficiently)

I'd like to have players build towns and form factions before starting all of that though. I think it'll be very interesting to see how players survive when the enviroment is the most dangerous opponent. :biggrin.gif:

    Yay for C&C background info:
