What's wrong with the good, ole 2x2 spiral? It lets you see danger before walking into it and it gives you an easy way back up to the surface when you're done (as well as an easy way back down if you still have unfinished business).
I know the odds of digging down directly over a deep ravine or lava pit are rather small, but with my luck, the ONE time it happens will be the one time I forget to leave my valuables at home. -_-;;
I prefer ladders, I get dizzy from all the turns and jumps of a 2x2. Or I do 3x3 so there is room for stairs.
For large builds I try to break it into smaller functional pieces, that way if I get bored it doesn't look half finished. I can then come back later and add to it.
I recommend the next best thing to straight down, dig a 1 x 2 hole. Stand on one side while digging the other throwing ladders up as you go. It gives you time to react and a way out. I place torches across from the ladder so I can see better.
I found the world's smallest stronghold. It had the entrance stairway, one crossover room, three empty iron door chambers and the portal room. No library or chest. I finally gave up and used an X-ray pack and found nothing else.
I am playing version 1.8, could this be an issue with this particular release?
Last night I was taking a short walk near a new base, I didn't bother unloading inventory since I wasn't going far. Night fell and I started home. It was getting dark and almost fell into a cavern. I stopped to peek in and, ssssss boom, then almost instantly boom again. I survived the double blast but was launched so high I died from a long fall.
By the time I made it back in every thing was gone.
If you are running cargo on the same line, look up tripwire rail switch on YouTube. When you are in the cart it will switch you to a separate track that you can run to your safe zone.
When I need blaze rods, I go in with diamond armor and bow and arrow. I snipe a few near a spawner then run through to pick them up. I always build a nether portal in the fortress with a base on the over world side with a pool and supplies for a quick exit if I get overwhelmed.
Just started my first vanilla 1.8 co-op smp. I've been playing 1.7.10 modded up until now. Still getting used to not having all the perks from the mods.
Built a simple underground base at spawn and we are building a fancy base in extreme hills.
Also built my first nether portal travel system between the bases.
Last night I started a new game playing Natural Magic mod pack for the first time. It adds new structures to the game. Decided to check out a large tower near the spawn point before I even gathered resources. Got to the top and it was near nightfall so I decided to stay on the top of the tower for the night, I was smart enough to block the stairs but the tower filled up with creepers during the night. I was able to out run most of them in the morning as the destroyed the tower behind me but got blowed up as I was making my way out the door.

I am building in something similar, just make sure to light up all those little ledges. I have had a few nasty surprises drop in on me from up high.

If they are not where I am building I don't bother filling them in, i just drop a torch and cover them up.

One thing I have been contemplating is a an entrance with multiple trick doors like the old Get Smart TV show.

Any recommendations for a good shader for the Natural Magic mod pack?
