I will only join should chest protection be removed specific to bandit use. Otherwise, state it outright, and don't bother even adding me.

<ZarroTsu> ...hoooo-leeeeee f*ck
<ZarroTsu> I got banned from a minecraft server, IMMEDIATELY, for dropping about 6 signs that someone lost when they died
<ZarroTsu> I mean jesus, there were cacti all around the start house and I saw a bunch of items sitting there; a shitload of signs, a door, a fish, a half-used axe, and a bucket I think.
<ZarroTsu> So while I'm off making armor, someone starts beating my ass from behind, so I quickly get the hell out of the craft table window -- which mind you I'd DROP WHAT I WAS CRAFTING WITH TOO, THANKS, and turn around to see some f*ggot Orbital hitting me with his stone sword. So I assume it's his house, and leave.
<ZarroTsu> He just keeps following me, so I run for spawn house to see if I can lose him.
<ZarroTsu> He stops and says "Gov was dupping", and f*cking immediately afterward I'm banned. I only caught a glimpse of his "I saw him throwing a lot of signs and a door" explanation.
Even if I were dupping -- WHO THE FLYING F*CK, WITH ALL THE DUPPING POWER IN THE WORLD, WILL FIND PROFITABLE GAIN OUT OF SIGNS!?
Pigmen will ONLY go hostile if they SEE you hurt another of their kind. If you manage to kill the group around you without too many others seeing you, no more should come to attack, so long as none spawn while you're fighting.
Or rather, this happened to me. I only had to contend with one or two, and the rest ignored me, and still ignore me. So if you manage to either kill them all off with fire, or a ghast, or trap them with lava, they should eventually whittle down to non-hostile ones.

My original intent in Creative with natural caverns is pretty simple: make them square. If you come across a natural cavern, first thing to do is assume a general floor area, then mine out all the walls so the floor and ceiling all match up evenly (save for "cross beams" in the upper corners of some walls). Sort of makes things more roomy, and easier to move around in, as well as a good self-indicator that "Oh, I've been here before, the exit is over there."
Ceiling height is usually 4 or 5 blocks for me, in any case; unless I come to a room whose ceiling is fairly far up, wherein I stack dirt and flatten it out. Torches I place either 3 or 4 tiles above the floor, to keep them out of the way without losing too much of the light.
While wooden-cross-beams-for-authenticity aren't needed, it's a good idea to place some form of adjacent pillars to indicate room differences.
I'd post a screen shot example, but the last time I tried out this method (it still works out very nicely, especially in survival) was on a public SMP server; and you know how they end up after 2 hours of uptime.
I'll hop on MC later today to hollow out a cavern room as an example, though.

You should be able to get away with one lava block making 12 or more falls each...
Hell, you can make an entire room of lava falls with a single lava block if you play with the preparation height enough.
