As everyone knows, with 1.9 we are getting the ability to glide around with the new elytra wings which is great on its own but combined with a punch II bow we can get true flight by shooting ourselves, even if it is a little bit silly.
This uses the property that arrows from a punch II bow give its target a large boost of velocity regardless of the arrow speed and even more velocity if its target is in the air. Sethbling has a very nice presentation of this where he uses it for long jumps.
While all this so far is old news and pretty obvious to some people to combined elytras with punch II bows I want to create a discussion on how to perfect this.
Optimal equipment
- An elytra with Unbreaking III and Mending
- A bow with Unbreaking III, Infinity, and Mending
- Food with good saturation
With the new saturation mechanic healing a ton we don't need to wear any armor. Unbreaking and Mending are obvious for longer flights and reusable equipment. You could even carry multiple bows and elytra for even longer flight given your not too slow about equipping new elytra.
Gaining Altitude
Gaining altitude is pretty easy, all you need to do is fire an arrow, fly into it, and pull up. If you are moving too slowly when you are trying to fly into your arrow you wont be able to reach before it just plummets to the ground. I find it is easiest to hit yourself with an arrow right after pulling up out of decent as you have enough speed to run into the arrow and you will already be pointing in the direction you want to go, up.
Taking off from the ground
This can be tricky but is amazing as you wont always have a cliff nearby. I find the best way to do this is by holding forward and the sprint key then firing an arrow with as little velocity as possible at about a 20 degree angle (doesn't have to be very precise and the angle shows as -20 in facing on the f3 screen) then immediately jumping and activating your wings. The arrow should hit you mid air and send you up into the sky.
An important note is that you cannot activate your elytra on the upward part of your jump so you need to time the activation of your elytra correctly. With the timing down you should only need to press the jump button once to jump and once to activate the elytra rather then spamming the button.
Also note that arrows do have some randomness to them so sometimes your take off will be very shallow. If this happens fire another arrow right after you take off while you are still moving fast otherwise you might not get enough height/speed to gain altitude.
Jump boost II can actually be very useful as it gives you much more initial height for take off and allows more time to activate your elytra. When using jump boost II increase the firing angle of the arrow.
I'd like to hear everyone else's tips and tricks for flying and hopefully we will all look much more professional flying around.
Make sure you set Quality -> Custom Colors -> ON, otherwise it won't work. Also, put it on top of your resource packs or it could be "overwrited" by other packs' light maps.
I have the newest optifine ultra for minecraft 1.8.9 installed but this pack is not doing anything. Lighting is set to moody with smooth lighting on max.
The super secret settings button was removed from the options screen during 1.9 and grum said it was removed because a lot of render stuff was being recoded.
I've having the same issue, ticking entity crash on maids taking damage. I don't have any of those mods installed though, I do have a ton of other mods installed.
I know LMM still doesn't work well with Battle gears 2, the game crashes when maids attack anything.
I'm having a serious issue with deep caveworld. every time I try to enter it I'm stuck in a void of nothing after the downloading terrain screen ends. nothing loads even after a long time, no commands work and I can't get out. resetting the dimension doesn't do anything either.
I'm having the same issue using the most recent version. Any solution?
Basically, yes. The chamber uses a seeded random number generator in order to generate the enchantments. If you are at the same coords, use the same armour, have the same stability and enchantability and enchantment level, it will ALWAYS give the same enchantments. So once you get Prot 4 on the pieces, you'll always get it.
Basically, I think you can get about Prot 4 with the chamber designs now. TheMadman managed to devise a method to get a lot higher, though!
I don't suppose this armor breaks the protection cap, trying to get higher then prot 4 doesn't really matter as long as the cap is there.

A fix.
put this in chat with cheats on
/give @a minecraft:command_block
put the command block down and put a button on it
right click the block while in creative mode
copy past this code into it
/give @p minecraft:diamond_sword 1 0 {AttributeModifiers:[{AttributeName:"generic.attackDamage",Name:"Blah",Amount:7.0,Operation:0,UUIDLeast:1,UUIDMost:1},{AttributeName:"generic.attackSpeed",Name:"Ed",Amount:4.0,Operation:0,UUIDLeast:2,UUIDMost:2}],display:{Name:"Toy Sword"}}
Click done
Now anytime the button is pressed the closest person will get a diamond sword without the limiting attack speed.
If you don't want it to be a diamond sword you can replace diamond_sword with whatever you want.
If you don't want it doing the damage of a diamond sword you can change 7.0 after "generic.attackDamage" to something lower
If you want to change the custom name of the item just change Toy Sword after Name to whatever you want.

There is a fix for it.

You can take off from flat ground.

Yes, cats are programmed to be annoying. They will seek out nearby beds and chests, sit on them so you can't use them and refuse to get up.

Has anyone heard anything about being able to enable the shaders in 1.9?

Very nice, ty.

The add on looks great, are you going to update it to 1.9?

Ya, Aether II is installed, thanks for the incompatibility information.

I heard they spawn more closer to 0,0. So instead of walking strait out walk around the inner circle.
