Basically they are useful If you need even more portability, like gaming (Nvidia shield and iPad Air 2 are powerful) and art (Surface Pro 3 pen is good)

Both are pathetic compared to my laptop I really don't even use it for that. If you are doing digital art you are going to be using something like a Wacom anyway. The glossy screen makes it irritating to draw on. For a person who draws just as a hobby a 150$ Wacom will be just fine. For the professional they are going to spend the money on a better product then the pro 3 from Wacom.

i think its not that great, i know am not going to get it (just like any other apple product there wastes of money) but one thing

    NEXUS 9 FTW

What exactly does the Nexus 9 provide in functionality that is not already filled in a better capacity by other devices most people own.
I have never at work decided that I have ever needed one of the tablets we have. At home I have never seen a situation where a tablet would be useful.

The Nexus 9 is just as bad as the Ipad and just as much of a waste.

I still do not see the point of a laptop I have a surface pro from work that I can use, but I just bring my personal laptop. Making a tablet thinner also makes it worse and harder to hold my GS4 is too thin for a phone and I purchased a case just so I could hold it easier.

posted a message on BASH Bug! It's the end of the world!
Anyone with a proper set up is going to not be infected. The major attack vector is Apache and if you are running Apache as root you are an idiot. Ubuntu/Debian/Android default shell is Dash not bash and are not as vulnerable. A properly configured restricted user profile and selinux/apparmor would keep anyone attacked through Apache limited from touching anything else. Not all Apache set ups are vulnerable either only ones that are taking user input into a bash shell and then creating environment variables.

None of the Linux boxes I manage were ever at risk through any form of vulnerability from this based on all attack vectors. This requires a two part thing no one can just break into bash its self. This is what happens if you let unauthenticated users have access to your shell.

Based on the definition of computer it is a machine that can perform arithmetic and is programmable. Well I would say the Z1 as it is the first programmable computer to actually have been physically built. Though if you want to count ones that were not built until later and were more of just a design go with the Analytical Engine.

Let me give you some reasons why I hate Windows 8 from a Technician standpoint (wall-o-text coming)

    • While troubleshooting it, if you can't get the computer to boot normally, you can't get into Safe Mode unless you have access to the System Recovery (which is hit or miss depending on your computer manufacturer and whether you have W8 install media). You have to use some crazy command in Recovery Console vs. just spamming F8.
    • The fast start-up feature can cause some funky problems. Such as being stuck at "please wait" even if your system is not bogged down like crazy.
    • The UI is just annoying. The UI issue is minor, but in some cases it adds extra unnecessary steps to get tasks done (see 1 for more of an example)
    • Service Pack 1 was not done using Windows Update which it should have been. You had to go through the store to do it. Most people I seen don't know this.
    • You're forced to make a Microsoft Account before you can attach any e-mail you want if you plan on using the built in Metro App.
    • If your user setup a Microsoft Account and registered it with their account, you cannot simply crack it off if the user has forgotten it (still seeing this too much). Granted this is better security-wise
    • When 8 was first released, you could easily cause a Blue Screen to occur (my superior was able to cause this to happen and mentioned it when we were demo'ing it.
    • The Blue Screen has been turned into useless junk. At least with the old system you could attempt to find out what's causing your Blue Screen. Now it's "OMG BLUE SCREEN! Sorry we're gonna try to fix it!"
    • "Refreshing" your system is useless. All it does is Check Disk which folks know could be a nice help or a gigantic waste of time. "Disguising it as "Refreshing your system" is stupid.
    • Check Disks take longer on W8 in some instances. Especially in Slow Systems (even on Windows 7 with same said system it was faster)
    • "System Restore" was re-branded with a different name but has the same essential function and the same potential problem of making your computer more messed up.
Though it does run better than Windows 7 when it's taken well care off, and the fast start-up feature is pretty handy.

I have no idea what you are talking about I have never had problems getting into safe mode, but here is the funny thing I have never been forced to on a Win8.1 machine. The old F8 method still functions to my knowledge just most computers boot too fast for a person to have time to hit it.

Only problems I have had with the fast startup is under dual boot situations otherwise it has worked flawless and it is easy to disable.

I like the new UI it is a lot closer to most Linux distributions that I use on a daily basis. The only problem I have with the UI it is a poor tablet UI having worked on a lot of RT tablets I can say without a doubt the UI functions much better on a mouse and keyboard.

Windows 8.1 was handled poorly, though I think this is how Microsoft is probably going to do OS upgrades from now on and they want to train people to go there.

My android phone requires a Google account before I can use Google Email whats your point?

Your right Microsoft should just remove all security Windows should function on the honor system. This is not a problem in any enterprise situation as AD makes this stupid simple to reset any persons password. You can't blame Microsoft for the users being stupid.

Really I have been running Windows8 sense it was released as Beta and the times the OS has blue screened has been a total of 0 times.

No they simplified the error message and event viewer still exists and you can still access the dump files from it.

From what I have seen it does more then this and the reset OS feature that is along side that one is fantastic and makes resetting end users PCs much faster.

    Have not noticed this problem.

System restore still exists I can access it right now on my machine.

Ahh yes, the obligatory ignorant Open Sores advocate, how can we forget to get their input.

With such a low barrier to entry to install the things it is something very easy to feel morally superior about without putting in any effort.

    I'm sorry, what? Higher density?

    Please explain how this:

Has a higher density than this:

    ?

You argument is simple not logical. Buttons on the start menu are easily big enough to be recognized quickly, and it's a lot faster to select something when you don't have to move the cursor all over the damned screen to do so (and sometimes scrolling to get where you want).

Usable density and overall without clicking through tabs of things. I could find any program on that start screen far caster then in that start menu a human is going to be able to pick up a colored image with an icon then a bunch of tiny icons with text.

I still don't get how you are using the screen that requires massive movement of the mouse. Scrolling takes little to no precision when clicking through tabs in a start menu is. Most other operating systems have abandoned the start menu style of displaying programs.

That doesn't help with the ludicrously oversized buttons.

They seem pretty appropriately sized on a 1080p monitor big enough to see the icon and recognize it quickly. Still faster and higher density of programs then the start menu.

Use the scroll wheel problem solved.

Could also just use the clearly better Windows 8 modern interface. Start Menu is dated and involves far too much clicking to get anywhere.

Not 100% sure how Mint handles releases if they do any back porting at all. I am just going to recommend you update to the newest Mint release, however because Mint is an awful OS it can't properly upgrade between version without a fresh install.

You are best off just installing Ubuntu then replacing the DE with whatever one you like from Mint. Getting MATE or Cinnamon is not very hard PPAs exist for both on Ubuntu.

You asked the community to find situations where an 8320 (not the significantly faster 8350) was beaten in gaming by an i5 or i7. This is a pretty clear-cut example.

Eh not exactly I asked where it was a CPU limitation that would prevent the game from being played. None of the games are unplayable with the 8320, the I7 costs a hell of a lot more if you are dense enough to think the minor performance gap is worth doubling the price then you have no concept of cost and use case. For the vast majority and really anyone here they do no need the I7.

In regards to the "8350 isn't significantly worse than the i7" comments:

    http://anandtech.com/bench/product/697?vs=1260

Dunno about you, but it looks to be like the i7 curbstomps the 8350 in pretty much every possible way.

No one ever made the claim ever the 8350 was faster or performed better. If you actually had the ability to read the post or actually read what you linked.
In just about every video game the performance difference is around 10% and the I7 is about twice the price.
If someone is doing a lot of rendering work and I mean actual work and is making money from it it makes perfect sense to go with the I7. For people here who just play games and might on occasion render a video or convert some files spending twice the price to save some time on rendering is a waste of money. If the person chooses to waste their money then fine, but recommending the I7 is stupid, and to say people are wrong to recommend AMD CPUs to budget buyers because the Intel CPUs that are twice the price are slightly faster in their use case.

You just called Linus an idiot and I'm not even gonna humor you anymore.

No I suggested working for a company who sells computer parts and then trying to act as the source of person to recommend it is a conflict of interests. I don't think he is an idiot just a person who works for a company. I don't think the used car sales man legitimately thinks his cars are just as good as new ones. I do wonder what his credentials are other then being paid to talk about technology. Though while he actually knew what he talked about the amount of worship around here for FM87 was unreasonable. A number of us caught him being wrong more then once. However he has the experience and is typically mostly correct most of the time. Still a human though and not a god though with the worship one might have made that mistake.
