I like the idea of being able to use these blocks in survival, but I don't see the need for a 'concrete mix' etc. I'd much prefer it if you simply crafted the slabs then crafted the blocks out of two slabs.

It's just a way I thought of obtaining Concrete, I may change it depending on the users feedback.
But I don't see a problem in adding Concrete Mix, it would not be the item with the least number of uses in the game.

PD: You may want to take a look to Ouatcheur's idea which I think it's pretty neat as it mantains the game's consistency.

I think adding specific "case by case" recipes, is not the way to go. Instead, having a common and CONSISTENT behavior for working with everything would be best. In short, all Materials, in all Styles, Variants, and Shapes.

Mainly, the following should be separated to make them applicable in a consistent fashion :

    Bricks

Wether it is clay or stone or whatever, the recipe should come from 4 individual brick items to make the bricks blocks.

The get the individual bricks from « stone and wood » materials could be as simple as :

Crafting : 2 slabs side by side = 4 brick items.

This would allow flower pots to exist in many other style not just « brown clay » but anything which has an ingot bricks or gem form. Nether, gold, iron flower pots too !

    Polished stone

The full smooth stone block should procude slabs of the same texture, and ANOTHER stone style would be the « polished » form we currently have for stone slabs.

Suggestion : smelting smooth stone (block or slabs or stairs) « polishes » it. The full block would not have the line at mid-height while the polished double slab would show the line.

Cracked stone could be gotten another way say through the anvil (for zero XP cost), thus we could have much more types of cracked stone not just one. For example, smooth stone stairs showing cracks.

Mossy also should be something that many blocks could have. Put anything say a slab + vines = the same thing but now mossy. this could be done either by adding texture layers to blocks, or just making a few tens of new blocks that are all just simple to make variants of existing blocks.

    Granite Andesite and diorite

Frankly those look more like new types of gravels than stones. They should have been added as full stones with a rough/cobbled, smooth, and polished forms, with slabs stairs etc. all following the same pattern as normal stone.

Rough and smooth styles for more blocks

Say, End Stone looks « rough » but who’s to say smelting it shouldn’t give a « smoother » version ? maybe even a "polished" one ?

    Pillars

That shouldn’t be reserved for quartz only. All kinds of blocks especially normal stone and stained clay heck even GLASS should be able to come in « pillared » versions.

    Sandstone

To me Stone and Sandstone should both come in the « full cobble » on all sides, full « smooth » on all sides, AND the « cobbled on the sides but smooth on top and bottom » versions.

I call this one the « worked » style. It could be crafted by putting 2 smooth stone over 2 cobblestone (same for the sandstones or whatever which comes in both a « rough » and a « smooth » style.

In short, If I want to make an ice castle with snow and ice and packed ice, and even some chiseled packed ice, with slabs and stairs and whatever, some glass stairs too, I should be able to do that, with the behaviors of most of the new block going along the sand > rough sandstone > smooth sandstone > chiseled or cracked or pillared.

I mean there are way too many things that require Silk Touch when they should not, or that are utterly impossible to do in the first place. 4 Snow should be craftable to make 1 Ice, and then craft 4 Ice to make 1 Packed Ice (since Ice can’t be smelted), and making slabs and stairs of all of those.

When building stuff in Minecraft, I often feel like I am playing with a lego set that has yellow blue and red 2x4 base bricks, but the 1x6 bricks come only in red, the 2x12 bricks come only in blue, and the 1x1 bricks come only in yellow.

That's an amazing idea! Would you mind If I added it to the OP?

Good idea, I support. One thing, though. It's not "concrete". Concrete is too modern for Minecraft. That block you call concrete is actually two smooth stone slabs smashed together. :)

Feel free to suggest another name for it :)

    READ THIS:
As this suggestion is getting quite some attention I started coding a mod implementing this using parts of @Ouatcheur's idea which implements this in a way that keeps the consistency of the game.

Post in the comment section below if you want a full mod on his idea or just on polished stone/polished sandstone.
This is just a completely different thing for now, as the original suggestion remains unchanged, but, feel free to choose in the poll on the top of this page if it should be using his idea or not.

    Original Idea:

I think those two blocks which were originated from bugs deserve to be in the game, as I've seen a lot of structures built out of them.

This is more or less how I think those should be implemented, if you have a better idea, please don't heistate to tell me in the comments or in a PM.

Concrete (otherwise known as Smooth Double Stone Slab)

    How would it be obtained:

You first would need to craft Concrete Mix like so:

Then with the Concrete Mix you would smelt it to get Concrete.

    -----

Smooth Sandstone (otherwise known as Smooth Double Sandstone Slab)

    How would it be obtained?

You would need to smelt regular sandstone.

But... Smooth Sandstone is already a thing!

The original smooth sandstone would be renamed to "Smooth Chiselled Sandstone".

posted a message on Placeholder Items
I've been thinking about this for some time now, and as a server owner and plugin developer, I think that It would be really useful to be able to get placeholder items which you could configure easily on a YAML file in a server's folder.

I know many of you would post "NO SUPPORT! Completely pointless, that's why a Plugin API is being coded!", but this Plugin API I have been hearing about has been in the works since forever and I have not seen much progress yet, yes, I know, they changed the item id's system to support mods without id conflicts, but that is just like a 15% of it.

    Why?

You could use them for many reasons, such as: mapmaking, to give them a custom behaviour using plugins or command blocks, using resource packs to make them look like completely new items, etc...

This, combined with the texture pack download option for servers would allow for much more complex minigames such as Cops and Crims.

Also it would not really change anything for vanilla minecraft.

    How?

As a developer myself I think it could be rather easy to implement it, but as I do not fully know how Minecraft works in it's core, please do not quote me on this.

The client could send a packet to the server asking for how many preset items they have got and some of it's basic properties, like if it's liquid, solid, an item, a block, edible, crops, etc...
And then just add them to the item list.
    Otherwise the game would crash.

It's a big design flaw... back in june I and a couple more of friends we were playing in a 1.7.5 world but then 1.7.9 came out, we updated the server but then we couldn't see our skins right, so we rolled the server back to 1.7.5, surprise, surprise, bye bye inventory.
