Extra layers are used for the fur around the shoulders and neck, breastplate, tunic on the legs, boot toe, helmet and one arm for a unique gauntlet type thing.
I've tweaked it even further since that pic and reached the final one, definitely going to keep it as it currently is for now. I also finished up texturing the stuff that you can't see unless you take off certain parts of the skin. So if you take off the 'jacket' layer you get a nice looking tunic with no breastplate, take off the shoulders and you get no fur but gain some nice shiny metal pauldrons, take off the helmet and get a gaping black maw where your face would be, etc. Worked out quite well actually!
Here are two pics without the 'jacket' layer on just before I finished off the shading on the tunic underneath.
40 degree days here feel better than Queensland 30 degree days for sure. The humidity makes you so uncomfortable whereas 40 just makes you feel hot and slightly bothered.
Also, PEOPLE ACTUALLY USE MY PACK! I probably need to update it sometime though.
Also, I am now questioning my name for my pack. It seems a bit long. A Glorious Day in the Countryside. Maybe, I ought to shorten it to The Glorious Countryside.
Yes pls.
Also I agree about the weather and also the shortened name. Long names are generally forgettable and will probably result in few clicks and less traffic.
Wow great, umm can you add mod support? Twilight forest, thaumcraft4 BiomesO'Plenty for example...
Like wulfre said (thanks for that btw), mods will come after vanilla stuff is done. The only exception to this is if it's a mod I've taken to using myself, as was the case with the better grass and leaves mod.
Anywho, what I've been up to. Firstly, I've remade the emerald block and snow side textures. Am currently redoing the brick block to make it a little more interesting and worthwhile using too. I've also had a look at the new snapshot textures and I'll be starting on the new stones veeeery soon now.
As for why I haven't posted here for a while, I've been doing textures for the alpha pack challenge and I'm about 50% done with that. Might release the pack once it's completed but it will only be for minecraft alpha 1.2.6 and I don't have any plans on updating it further at this stage:
(using a palette if you're wondering why a couple of things have slightly odd colours)
Also since the latest snapshot came out I made a new skin. Cookie to whoever knows what it's from (hint: it's a as of yet unreleased video game). I'll release the skin to the public once PMC updates to the latest skin format.
I finished everything from the required version of alpha, so I added in some more blocks, like hardened clay, sandstone, stone brick, etc..
The melon looks weird due to the green background.
Looks great, I really like it!
It's actually a simple pack I'd use to take a break from my pack and other more detail intensive ones. Really nice and refreshing. Plus I've been looking for another simple-ish pack to use. (been using hazelwood but I do like to have a few similarly themed packs that I can swap between to keep everything fresh)
Any in-game pics? (alpha or otherwise)
Also, you up in QLD? I flew through there coming back from melbourne and even a 30 something day felt worse than the 40 something days here because of the humidity.
And what about the 99.9% of us that DON'T make skins?
Dinnerbone implied that this long-requested feature would affect everyone. But no. Skins skins skins.
14w03a I can say is the most disappointing snapshot to date.

I don't think he was implying anything. It's the internet, implications are as difficult to decipher as sarcasm.
Also it does affect everyone, you have a skin, do you not? It's irrelevant as to whether you make them or not, everyone has a skin (well, almost everyone).
Draz, I'll make them different somehow, probably just a larger pauldron and changed leather elbow pad. No reason to keep it exactly the same as the picture since it will never be perfect anyways.
I took advantage of the new layers to make a better looking halo-armor suit.
Actually, skeletons do have a hat layer. Dinnerbone must have forgotten too. There's nothing weird about the mapping on the arms. They just aren't automatically mirrored.
Well... ~the more you know~
Nice upgrades to the skin too although I think you should try making the chestpiece a tiiiiny little bit less blocky. (that might be the angle though, can't tell if the chest has depth or not)
Also, there is something weird (at least with mine), look at these pics in-game, note both sides are mirrored perfectly.
Now look at the skin itself.
It looks like it's one arm rotation out of whack (for the top right arm texture, aka the right arm)... Now this could be by design, but if it's by design I think it's pretty stupid. Seems a bit haphazard to have the the texture mirrored and then also moved across 4 pixels for each face of the arm.
Yes, the hat layer works on dropped heads for zombies as well as players. (But not skeletons)
I don't think skellies have a hat layer so that doesn't fuss me so much.
On a sidenote, has anybody else actually tried testing the new skin template? It's really, really peculiar. The legs should both be down the bottom imo, with the arms on either side. Makes much more sense.
Not only that but the arms wrap really strangely. The front and sides are in strange places, at least for the right arm. Makes texturing skins pretty hard without any way to preview it but I'm slowly managing.
EDIT: As my test skin I'm making this guy. Should be able to test most/all of the new skin features with him I think!
Didn't someone mention that the hat layer now works on dropped heads?
If yes, then that's awesome, will make my zombie heads not look entirely foolish and terrible! Even if we don't get extra layers for the other mobs, just that small fix will make me happy mob-wise.
Well it's not the only thing they've made this week.
I'm also pretty sure they've mentioned cubic chunks would never happen, same with another dimension with the aether (not as sure about the other dimension but I'm 99% positive they've actually MENTIONED cubic chunks as never happening, sometime around the height increase)
As for dynamic lighting, that might come in the future but to get it to work properly and well (as the new dynamic lighting system would likely replace all of the old lighting system) it will take more than a week.
Don't forget that this was just ONE week (if just a day or two if we take into account from when dbone tweeted out), dragon was plausible for a whole weeks work but the others would've taken much, much longer to be implemented properly.
I think you guys were expecting way too much for just a week (/day or two going by the tweet date). Coding is hard work.
I actually agree. I've never gone and complained to either of them but this is pathetic. You can't build something up like this that takes less than an hour to code. Having different colored arms and legs is NOT worth the kind of hype they made.
A twitter post is hardly hyping it up and he was correct in what he said, it is a LONG requested feature and is absolutely fantastic for those who've ever made a skin and know how stupidly annoying it was to only have a hat layer with mirrored arms and legs.
This might make me create a few more skins. I already have a few ideas that I never made before since the arms and legs were mirrored. The whole layer system is just icing on the cake.
Barely any progress but like I said, it's super damn hot today. 44 degrees and I had to go to uni as well. My arms melted off so I'm now texturing with my face.
Gonna change the colour of the jukebox and possibly change the speaker bit, it's quite boring as it is right now.
EDIT: Oh and drazile, you think his ore colours are weird? I have to use my diamond colours for my 'iron' on my chests and workbench because the iron uses the wood colours and just blends right in. That's the lack of blue in this palette shining through proudly!
Small avatars like mine upscale to a certain minimum size which makes it looks blurry and terrible, the main section where you select which thread to click on looks rather clunky compared to the current version - the icons to the left are very bland and the thread titles only seem to spread across half the available space which clutters things up. Also the plain white background makes it kinda fatiguing to look at.
Titles across half available space:
On the plus side, I like the new location for quoting, replying, etc. and the new editing looks really nice and well thought out.

I mean, it's alright but I think it could be a lot better. Any advice?
EDIT: Actually, it looks a lot better with a texture pack on... Maybe my eyes were just being sucked towards the ugly background.

Still, I'll give the update a go with my tablet, see how well it handles them now. (also something that was sub par before)

Woo! Three cheers for melbourne!
Now excuse me while I go to uni and melt once again. Then I'm going to come home and either work on this or some skins.

Time to make some dark souls skins!
