    Little effort. Key words there, "little effort". You're still exerting effort every time you want to go somewhere, you're just getting there faster.

    If the bicycle operated like a mob farm, you would build the bike and it would take you places while you slept, without costing you anything.

    True enough, but once Notch implements mobs that destroy blocks, then mob farms will be bumped up from no effort to little effort.

    I'm pretty sure someone made the comparison between walking and cars. While that's an incredibly good comparison, it's better if you compare walking and bicycles.

    If you spend several hours making a bike, then you can use that bike to go long distances with little effort. If you walk, it's harder and you can't go as far. Does this mean that bikes are unbalanced? If they were, then why are there far more walkers in the world than bicyclers?

    2. You can't discredit the results of the poll because the people posting in the subsequent thread are saying things contrary to the polls results. In my experience I've found that people who have opinions in the minority are the most vocal about it.

    This is the simplest phrasing of the truest statement it took me a long time to realize. If there was a rep-type function, you would be getting a lot of rep.

    Even so. 5000 per hour or whatever it is is still absurd. That would just halve my figures. Either way, the time spent per item will eventually decrease to near 0.

    Yes, I did know what you meant by items. Hence the edit. Additionally, the inventory only has room for something like 2560 items, so even with the 10,000 per hour you'd need to move things to a chest/make more chests every 15 minutes, which is fairly active for "idle play". Also, assuming you get equal numbers of all mobs, I'd only use 40% of the items I get, whereas with digging, I use 100% of the items I get.

    No mob farm will ever give you 10,000 items an hour. Besides, if you are digging, you get items a whole lot faster (slightly more than 100x, assuming Dirt and a Diamond Shovel) than 1 item every 40 seconds, and I use Dirt/Cobblestone waaay more than I use feathers/string.     I posted this early on in the Mob Farm Thread, but it was quickly consumed in a raging flame war and ignored, so here it is again. I would love to hear people's opinions/criticisms.

    I'm not exactly sure that there is anything to fix. Sure, you can say that mob farmers aren't fun or a valid use of the game mechanics, but that isn't for you to decide. It's a sandbox game. You need to decide your own type of fun from whatever means you want, and as long as you are not impeding other people's fun, it's fine. Besides, it's not a glitch. It's not some errant exploitable bug that Notch hasn't got around to fixing yet. It's an automated trap. You can argue that it's not a trap, but you'd be wrong, because that's really all it is.

    No one gets hurt from mob farmers*. It doesn't make other people have less fun. If you don't like it, feel free to not use them, and play in places that don't use them. I won't stop you, nor will anyone else. It would be simply ridiculous to force someone to do something they don't want to do. It is equally ridiculous to force someone to not do something they want to do.

    *You could say that griefing in SMP would be greatly reduced if there wasn't TNT to grief with. True. You can also remove TNT from the game, or restrict TNT access, or any number of simple solutions to that problem.

    Additionally, now that we're getting solid numbers on people's opinions, I don't think we should remove something if the majority of people are fine with it the way it is.
