Right, but screw the CoS. Just use an item vacuum and a fire or lightning seal to kill. Do what you're talking about and you're going to end up with a giant tainted field a ton of wasted space on filters for a tiny trickle of additional vis. I did something like this outdoors but I just used chains of air seals to push all the mobs to a central spot and then a mob vacuum to hold them in place for the CoS. Total waste of time. I covered about 6 chunks worth of space in a plains area and it took more than an hour to fill 3 tanks of vis. I'm not sure what the exact rate of accumulation was, or how much I was losing to being too far away for mobs to spawn there, but that just further reinforces the fact that CoS is underpowered. Just feeding the pile of drops to a cauldron filled up 3 tanks over again, and that's with significant loss because I wasn't getting good item capture at the time (fixed that later). Also, outdoor/daytime mobs tend to have lower, cheaper drops vs. grinders/spawners, especially skeletons(0-2 bones + 0-2 arrows = profit).
[edit: note that once you taint the field it's only going to spawn (spoiler) which drop (spoiler spoiler) which is not profitable for vis production]
I'm tellin' you guys, no matter what machine you dream up the math is not gonna work out to bother with CoS You *can't* feed it enough mobs to keep up a usable stream of vis without extraordinary effort unless you bring other mods into the mix, and when you do there are still much better options that will prevent the CoS from being interesting, let alone tempting enough to be dangerous. I've tried to make it work on and off all week with different setups and I keep coming to the conclusion that it's not worth the effort, even for dirty vis for the dark infuser (which gets plenty enough taint just with an unmodified crucible and some cobblestone when I need to use it). Initially I just wanted to slow-feed an enchanter with a mob spawner I found in a dungeon, but even that was a waste of time (the enchanter didn't get enough vis to operate without supplement). The spawner *did* however yield lots of research material.
I say nerf the multi-CoS exploit, then buff the vis output massively (like 5-10x) and the taint output to the same degree, but just dump half the taint right into the atmosphere. Then it'll be a "hoo boy if I can just find a way to manage the risks this will be an awesome power source" thing instead of a "meh, I could probably find a way to make this kinda useful if I really tried" thing. Compare to IC2's power systems, which are really well balanced. When it comes to automated power output, you can go expensive, slow and safe (solar/wind/water arrays, Type 1 reactors) or omfg cheap and high energy but extremely risky (e.g. type 3/CASUC reactors).
Also see poll results for "which is your primary power source" - there's a reason people aren't using these things and it can be fixed pretty easily with a small tweak.

Re: "infinite" vis from CoS: not really. I mean yeah, theoretically, if you just let minecraft idle minimized for hours on end between play sessions you can fill some vis tanks up with a mob grinder, but that's stupid. I can do the same thing with a vis crystal garden + (spoiler item) and get much faster, much higher vis output using condensers or just feeding the crystals to a crucible. I can plant additional crystals during every cycle, increasing output exponentially for idle time. Top of head estimate, I can produce about 2-3 crystals per hour per block. Plant about 20 crystals... yeah, never gonna run out of crystals. I can even automate this using redpower if I'm careful about timing.
CoS? Nope. Mob spawn is basically a fixed rate with a plateau of the maximum mob grinder size you can build within the radius around your avatar that mobs will spawn (I think this is ~64x64x256 on an anvil map). The only way to make more is to farm ghasts, which can't be automated, and then you still have to feed it with more mob grinders. If you want to scale this up beyond the radius that mobs will spawn from your player you need to have additional chunks loaded, which means another mod with forced chunk loading and spawning. Then your max vis performance is capped by the limitations of your computer, and you're *still* waaaaaaaay less efficient than building a similarly sized crystal farm.
Points about crystal farming being OP aside, CoS is not "infinite", it's finite at a miniscule level (with the multi-CoS exploit fixed, which is definitely fair). It only becomes infinite as your play time becomes infinite. In the time your single-CoS mob grinder produces an equivalent amount of vis to a crystal farm, let alone active resource gathering, I will have died of old age IRL.

I was wondering where you learned to use open glsl. I've been trying to make more then just recycled bits of minecraft graphics, and apply them as such, but discerning notches graphics code is hell-in-a-handbasket. Any tips or pointers or just all around helpful anything that could get me goin on it? I see your prowess with this graphics library and you make me want to hate and love you at the same time. Anyway's wonderful work on the mod, if you ever wanna try anything else it'll probably be twice as awesome as thaum. Keep up the good work!
the vis tanks are made of glowy blue enchanted wood, and the vis valve harness the power of redstone to interact with the flow of vis.
Finally, I've been able to craft the misterious Thaumium, a metal unknown to the modern man, that is made of the same maerial of vis itself. It is one of the most beautiful thing that man has ever saw. I hope, as those ****ing carvings tacke a lot of time to do.

Wouldn't vis production in the nether cause totally negate the need to purify an area?
Just throw some purification seals in the overworld, and do all you vis production in the nether?
That way all the taints in one world, and the overworld is purfied.
