Sorry if this post appears lengthy at first; I'm just being thorough.

If you have Java installed, you should be able to simply launch the .jar file through Java by double-clicking the .jar file. If not, try to right-click it, then choose "Open with" > "Java(TM) Platform SE Binary".

You should then see a little "OptiFine Installer" window pop up. In this, all you have to do is click "Install" (ignore the "Extract" button). Once it says "OptiFine is successfully installed", simply click "OK", and the installer should close.

Now open the Minecraft launcher (the default/official one is perfectly fine for this, and is what OptiFine installs itself into), and simply launch the game. The OptiFine game profile should already be active now. (If not, then beside the green "Play" button, there will be a "drop-up" button. Click on it, then click on the "OptiFine" profile to select it.)

Once the game launches, enter the "Options..." > "Video Settings..." menu, which has many new options now. Your children are referring to the new "Dynamic Lights" option. Click on it twice to set it to "Fancy", and then try playing a bit around in some caves with a torch in your hand.

(You may now dabble in the rest of the video settings, too. Personal favourites of mine are setting the "Details..." > "Fog" option to "Fancy" (though not all computers are affected by that), the "Quality..." > "Antialiasing" setting to 16 (be aware that this can decrease performance a lot(?)!), and the "Quality..." > "Connected Textures" option to "Fancy". But keep the "Shaders..." option at "Off" unless you're aware of exactly what it does.)

If you want to download OptiFine for a different version of Minecraft (such as version 1.14, once it releases and then once OptiFine is made for it), note that you'll have to play a non-OptiFine version of it (in order to download it) before you can install OptiFine for it.

Thorough indeed. Thank you. The right-click option was what Java 11 wanted apparently. Thank you. I truly appreciate your time and information with all of this. I'll try it on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS in a few days, too, and see what it does for the laptop. We are grateful.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I am okay with taking a load off of the system, especially for my daughter who usually runs 50K browser tabs and Roblox and everything else under the sun with MC out of pure spite that she is a multi-tasking phenom like her mother. My son... he's more like me, a few tabs that matter, why run two games if you can only play one at a time, and who the heck needs that many tabs in a browser? He's awesome. He's his daddy's son.

The download link on the first page of this post points to a jar file, OptiFine_1.13.2_HD_U_E4.jar. Since my experience with Java is strictly with MC launching, I am unsure what I need to do to install it and not use a launcher like Magic Launcher. Or would you recommend the launcher? I am a n00b here, not sure which approach to take. Testing the waters.

I will do all of this first, get a hang for it, then hook the kids up. I don't want them messing with this stuff. Their safety is paramount.

    Cheers,

Good afternoon, optifiner's. I am a father whose two children have asked to install and use OptiFine on their stystem. The only real "benefit" one could give me was that the torch glows as you walk with it. Looking at the wiki and older posts I see it does so much more, but do my children really need this? I guess I will have to test it to find out before I give them the green light. I have a few questions, however:

-Do they really need this? They both have powerful systems (gtx 1060 3gb GPU with core i7-8500 CPU / and / rx580 8gb GPU with Ryzen 5 1600X CPU. They run everything great. I don't know why they want this. Will it provide any benefit to them?

-Will it require anything to install onto their Java Edition? Or I can just run an installer and all is well?

    A concerned father,
