Lava can set things on fire that is near it. Used to happen on my heated pool that was surround in stone. Don't think that fire can spread, but not sure about that.
I just started a new world and my current home is a treehouse. You could try that, it's really fun to get bonemeal and grow the trees then shape and mould them to make it into a house. I try to use as much of the natural leaves for the floors, walls, and ceilings as possible.
Background: I am a modder and have been ever since I've been able to figure out how to run a mod on Minecraft. I love them a lot and really think they enhance the game. However, with the release of 1.8 and all the new features it brings, I decided I would start a legit survival world with a completely vanilla minecraft.jar. So I started it out, and I have to say, its been epic. It is really nice to go back and play the core of Minecraft once again. This is where the challenge comes in:
If you mod your game:
Back up your current bin then start Minecraft and hit that force update button. Get back to the core of Minecraft once again, you may be surprised.
If you don't mod your game:
Try a mod. Head over to the released mods section and find one that suits you. Just be careful what you do. Again, you may be surprised at what you find.
Post your reactions and maybe some pictures of your creations with your clean or modded minecraft.jar
EDIT: Minecraft is also prone to random lag spikes, so it may not be an issue on your part. I have a computer that gets anywhere from 30-300 fps and I have no idea why.
He means to say something about single block logic gates. My support is false. If it was that way redstone would be made too easy, then it'd just be something easy to do, nobody can teach anything then. Things would be boring because nobody has any good skill in anything. Redstone pretty much the only thing you can progressively get better at. Adding it craftable logic gates would just ruin the point of the gates.
Try one or more of the following:
1. Get a better internet connection
2. Get a better/faster computer
3. Find a server that's not hosted in the US if you live in Australia
4. Find a server with a more reliable provider (some providers are just generally laggy and bad)
Millenaire is almost certainly the cause of the lag. If you are getting lag spikes frequently, try updating to the latest version or removing it all together. The rest should be fine unless the texture pack you use is high resolution.

And maybe I typed in the seed wrong, but what I saw was nothing out of the ordinary.
