For a long time people have held that you should never dig straight down in Minecraft. If you do, you'll fall into lava, burn, and die. I accepted this saying as true after one of my first few times playing Minecraft. The first time I thought to question it was when I dug straight down in the Minecraft demo and didn't die at all.
