As the spiders try to climb, they bump the cacti and take damage. When the cactus grows, it breaks off and can fall into the left water stream. When the spiders die, their string can fall into the right water stream. Later on, the right water stream can turn and go through a 2x1 hole under the wall. Also in this hole is a lava knife over the spider-drop-collection flows! Then, if any other mobs wander into the moat outside, they get swept in and killed by the lava knife. All their drops are belong to us.
Now you've got:
1. A spider-proof wall
2. A nighttime mob grinder
3. An automatic cactus machine
