I dug straight down by my spawn in a new world, dug a tunnel at bedrock until I found redstone and some iron, then made a compass. I dug a staircase up, found a dungeon, reached the surface, and used the compass to get back home.

No it doesn't... it left my bucket empty in the furnace and I was able to collect it again!
This was added recently. Nobody does it because it ate your bucket, and nobody cared for a smelting process that devoured three iron. Thus, it fell into obscurity.
