This sounds obnoxiously annoying to research, but I had a bit of a lightbulb go off in my head . . .
Couldn't you set up an array of 5x5 plots, each with a single mushroom in the middle. Say . . . 50 of them. Then observe them. When half of them have a second mushroom, the duration of time passed should be about average. I'm sure its not that exact, but clearly you guys know the math better than I do . . . does this sound like a viable testing method?
That would calculate the median time, not the average. You would need to record every mushroom time to get the mean. Still, the median is usually close to the mean, so it's still a useful figure.
EDIT: Oh, and if you're doing a 48-plot sample, could you also record the 25% and 75% milestones? You could do a box-and-whisker plot with those numbers.

The worst update is always the current update. If we're on version B, it's the worst and A was the best. The moment C releases, B becomes the best, A was one of the worst ever, but C is the worst. When D releases, C was the best update ever since it was better than B and D ruined it all. Any new features are the worst new features. Unreleased features are the best new features until they are released, at which point they become the worst because the old features are way better.

2. Try glowstone and jack-o-lanterns. In the city, remember that mobs spawn on ground, so only the flat surfaces will be an issue.
3. Nether portal would be cool, if you could get it to work, but a tunnel along the sea floor from the beach sounds cool.
