Well, I was playing on a private server when one of my friends (yes, he is one of my friends) hacked in ice and tried to kill me. He's been a griefing problem for a while now and usually he's not on the whitelist anymore.
Torches aren't bright enough, you have to put like 1 torch every block if you want a decently lit house.
Actually, torches can be places every 9-12 blocks and prevent monster spawning. Turn your screen brightness up or don't play where lots of light shines on your screen.
There's only 2 mobs, but the only aggressive one is one that shoots from far away and destroys the island you stand on, eventually just leaving you with a portal floating above lava.
Deflecting the missiles is difficult and chances are it won't hit anyway. They spawn faster than you kill them so killing them is rather pointless.
You can make another portal somewhere else, but you don't really have control where it'll take you, and chances are you can't walk there and back without some major reconstruction to the nether, and on top of that you got to constantly repair what gets blown to pieces.
Nether isn't fun. It just feels really poorly made, it offers so little and is more a pain to deal with than worth it seems.
Don't get a portal on a floating island, then. Get to the mainland or build a stone island.
Don't try to kill them. Build structures they can't destroy.
As I said, don't build out of weak materials. Cobblestone is a plentiful and ghast-proof resource.
Yes, the Nether needs some love. But it has lots of mushrooms, Glowstone, and lots of Netherrack. And Soul Sand.
