posted a message on Found server for Minecraft Alpha 1.0.17_02

I found a REALLY old minecraft_server.jar on archive.org that had been archived from the official minecraft.net website.

    The link is https://web.archive.org/web/20100831092001/http://www.minecraft.net:80/download/minecraft_server.jar?v=1283149033651

The version number the server reported when I ran it was 0.1.4, which didn't seem to correspond to any known version number for the Minecraft client. Usually the version of the server matches the version of the corresponding client (for newer versions at least, but this was an alpha version, so no guaranties with version number matching). According to the date on archive.org, this is from August 31, 2010. So then I checked the Minecraft wiki, and indeed that put it in the Alpha phase of game development. Still using the wiki, and looking at Minecraft Alpha version history, I checked to see what the latest version of Minecraft was that would correspond to this date. As it turns out, Alpha 1.0.17_02 was released on August 23, 2010, and the next version wasn't released until after the date archive.org had for this server. Since the client and server are released together, that meant the slightly older version of the client must match the server, rather than the slightly newer client.

And when I tested it, it worked! Indeed Alpha 1.0.17_02 is the correct client version for server 0.1.4. While it is buggy (certain areas can't have blocks mined or placed), it still runs, and that's good.

Another bug (at lest with the server, not sure about single player). You can NEVER keep any items. When you log out, you lose all your items, and also chests do NOT retain items. You log back in and all the items in your inventory and any chests are gone.

I know they are still in snapshots. So what I'm wondering is just when do they plan to release the official version?

posted a message on Laucher update with possible privacy reduction

The previous version of the launcher had this settings screen.

However, the current version has this settings screen.

With the removal of the "Allow Mojang to collect user data" switch, does this mean it is PERMANENTLY collecting user data? I sincerely hope not. I hope it means it is disabled forever, rather than enabled forever.

This is especially important, because this upgrade was FORCED. I just started up my launcher today, and without asking me it started updating the launcher. And I can't find ANY settings to disable forced updates either. It seems that with this new launcher all updates are forced, whether you want them or not.

posted a message on I found a copy of the real minecraft classic 0.30 JAR!

So they're not adding Classic 0.30 to the launcher because 0.30_01c is there?

I don't know. I've contacted them, and I'll see what they end up doing. Maybe they didn't even know that this was accessible on archive.org but I contacted them and let them know.

Hey! I changed one tiny tidbit in a c0.29_02.JSON file to make it run! Here is the link.

BTW this is a great find!

EDIT: You have to rename the minecraft.jar to c0.30.jar and put it in a folder named c0.30

More importantly, where did you get a copy of Classic 0.29_02? That version isn't even available in the launcher yet.

Red, welcome to the fam! And Videogamer555, as much as we understand that there are individuals under 18 that are mature, it is much easier for us to focus on only recruiting members that are 18 and older. It’s also a server culture thing, as it may be hard for someone younger to have much to contribute to a conversation, and vise versa.

I was worried. I thought maybe you were a server specializing in players who used skins that were pornographic. And I was thinking, NO NO NO NO, that's not what Minecraft is for!

posted a message on Looking for absolutely plain vanilla MC server

I mean like they just downloaded minecraft_server.jar (or .exe) and ran it as-is. Absolutely no mods. And preferably no command blocks being used to impose limitations (like not breaking or building in certain areas) or other effects (like colorful messages that pop up when you join or walk into certain areas). The only restrictions that should exist is that players shouldn't have access to cheats, which is the default behavior for non-op players on a vanilla server.

Can anybody here point me to such a server?

posted a message on Just found another lost MC version

In the launcher, you will find a beta version called "Beta 1.6.3" which which shows up in the launcher as b1.6.3. However, there's another similarly named version, that's not the same. It's called "Beta 1.6 Test Build 3", which does not appear in the launcher at all. To download it, you need to go to Minecraft's official Amazon AWS website. The link is: https://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftDownload/prerelease/build.zip

In this zip file, you will find the minecraft.jar for "Beta 1.6 Test Build 3", as well as the and corresponding minecraft_server.jar for running a server if you want to.

    Quote from JavaKitsune»

The rule on not advertising "looking for players" only applies to the Server Recruitment sub-section of the Minecraft Java Edition Forum.

This meaning that on the PC Server sub section, you're allowed to advertise both staff/building positions along with player positions, you just can't only say "looking for players" on the Server Recruitment sub section because that is meant for only staff/builder recruitment, not player recruitment.

Again, on PC Server sub section, staff/builder + player recruitment is allowed

On Server Recruitment sub section, player recruitment isn't allowed, only staff/builder recruitment.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks for the info.

posted a message on I found a copy of the real minecraft classic 0.30 JAR!

Cool, hope they respond soon, I'd love to see what Classic was like back in the day.

You can still play Classic 0.30_01c in the launcher (and have been able to for a long time now)), but not the original Classic 0.30. What I linked to is the the original 0.30, so you can download it. Not sure what differences there are (they look the same to me), but there must be some improvements in 0.30_01c (maybe bug fixes of some kind?).

posted a message on What's up with these rules?

I just read https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/forums/forum-discussion-info/2601558-pc-servers-rules . if I'm only allowed to advertise for people to join as staff to run my server, and not allowed to advertise for players to play on my server, how can anybody expect to get players. Merely posting "this server exists" without advertising for staff specifically would probably count as advertising for players too, because if you post the existence of your server without specific info about staff, it probably means I'm letting people know of the servers existence because I want people to play. But that's not allowed. So if I do create a server (which I'm planning to do), how do I make people know the server exists? I won't need any staff, as I plan to run it myself, but I won't want to be the only person playing on the server. That would get really boring.
