Add about one second to the amount of time an object triggered by a stone button stays active. The reason I suggest this is because in SMP a little bit of lag can make it difficult to get through an iron door opened via a stone button.
Gold doesn't have enough uses right now, and mine carts aren't all that practical if you don't use a booster glitch. Here's a suggestion to help improve both of those issues.
Golden mine cart tracks:

These tracks would increase the amount of kinetic "energy" a moving mine cart has in whatever direction it's traveling in (without increasing their speed beyond the maximum speed, of course). Alternately, if that's not viable from a programming standpoint, they could increase the cart's kinetic energy for moving in the direction the player was facing when they placed it. For example, if the player was facing north when they set the golden mine cart track, any carts passing over it would be pushed north.
This would go a long way towards making mine carts a more viable method of transportation.
There's no balance justification for not letting tools stack. It's purely a convenience factor. You can already carry enough of each tool that you shouldn't run out of any in a single run (ie, at no point in time are you forced to choose whether to have swords and bows for defense or shovels and picks for digging, you always will have both).

I loved the screaming. I'm neutral on whether or not they should die in lava, but the screams should come back.

That would be fine too. Minecarts just need to be more effective without needing to rely on glitches.

I don't think that's accurate, but I admit to not being "in the know" wrt steampunk.

Minecraft "lore?" Steampunk?? Neither of these things actually exists in any form in the game.
