The Crusades were, essentially, striped down to the basics, an attempt to regain the Holy Lands at all cost from the Muslims. One Religion pitted against another. If it goes against someones over-zealous beliefs, they will resort to Violence, despite there learnings in the Bible.
I know it's considered by most people to be unreliable, and a bad source of taking moral teachings, but the Old Testament has God killing millions of people because of there Religion. How is this any better than Hitler, Stalin, or any other genocidal killer? But then he went back on his stance, and became a peace loving God? How is that not a contradiction?
And there is, of course, Religious Zeal which can lead to people dying. If you believe so strongly in Religion, and/or belief system, (Including Atheism), you can do bad things. Including the murder of other Human beings. However, you need to define where you draw the line between Murder and War. I personally believe that there isn't a line. If you kill another human being, it's murder. There are Religious wars, the Wars in Israel, many people die there because of the hostility between Muslims and Jews, who both staunchly believe that they, and they alone are correct. The War against terror, the Taliban is a Islamic extremist group. However, not every Muslim is an fundamentalist.
As they saying goes "Too much of anything is bad", if you believe in something to strongly, you will become zealous, and will kill.
I feel that if I got a chip that made me more intelligent, and I got the Job that I want, I would feel that I had cheated. I like to get my knowledge from Books, the Internet, and word of mouth.
The Crusades were Religiously sanctioned. The Vatican strongly supported the Crusades, and said that every soldier that went to fight in the name of God was guaranteed a spot in Heaven. The purpose of the Crusades was to take back the Holy Lands from the Muslims. There was, as Felthat says, also political reasons as well. Many people went to get away from there impoverished life, and to get a new start in the Holy Lands. But one must not forget that the majority of people in Medieval Europe were quite Religious, and would listen to the Pope, and do as he told. I am not saying it was entirely one or the other, but Religion was definitely a driving force behind the Crusades.
And about mass-murdering Atheists. Stalin was a confirmed Atheist. But Hitler, there is much confusion over his Religious beliefs. "The National Government will regard it as its first and foremost duty to revive in the nation the spirit of unity and co-operation. It will preserve and defend those basic principles on which our nation has been built. It regards Christianity as the foundation of our national morality, and the family as the basis of national life." That is a statement made by Adolf Hitler, February 1st, 1933. Google "Adolf Hitlers religious views", you'll get some good stuff. Including a rather long wiki article.
