posted a message on Did the Terrain Become BORING? (UPDATE 6/5/13 - 1.7 is a biome update?)
    Quote from Master4902

I imagine that the old terrain must've looked something like this (because I didn't play <= 1.7.3)?

In some aspects yes, except that the mountain in your picture could have just as easily formed IN a plains biome, making something akin to a grassy badlands area, or a Lonely Mountain. Also, areas with water looked better in several ways, one of which was the possible existence of interesting gravel beaches. If you'd like to see some famous seeds/areas from the old generator, try Googling "old glacier seed" and "404 challenge."

posted a message on Larger Terrain Generation (Not Biomes)
Such an improvement to the terrain generation would be momentous! Scenery could be far more beautiful and resemble the real world quite a bit more. For my two cents worth, I think some mountains should be higher than the old sky limit of 128 blocks and be snowcapped. In order for snowcapped mountains to work well, snow could fall on terrain above 128 blocks (possibly only in extreme hills biomes) rather than generate based on the x and z coordinates in the world.

posted a message on Bring Back Beaches!
Yes. I agree completely with the OP. Although I'm not eager for another terrain generation change to mess up the biomes in everyone's worlds again, I think some changes will be necessary to restore the aesthetic appeal that minecraft maps had before 1.8.

I am especially annoyed at the appearance of the seabed. BLEAGH! Seeing the screenshots before and after really brings back memories of better scenery. The removal of gravel beaches is also sad, as it was realistic and provided some variety to the coastline.

I've been having the same exact problem. (OS X, nearly identical error message)

Yes, I had this issue also. I started over with a new jar and installed Optifine using the "jar xf" and "jar uf" to decompile and recompile from the console instead of turning the jar into a zip and installing the modded files through finder. Now when I launch minecraft with optifine, the "Mojang" screen appears briefly, and then minecraft crashes and the launcher spits out this crash report:
