I started a minecraft server for me and a few friends a while back. Now that I feel it is stable enough to add people, I am posting it up here on the forums. I am using CraftBukkit and try to add useful mods whenever possible. I have three moderators, who I know in real life, but they are not OPs. This means that they moderate, but are not overpowered. They have the ability to jail people. Their names are LilBeastie, mastej, and goldentoad. mcjosh is my IGN. The server runs 1.6.6 and i try to keep it updated with bukkit and minecraft updates, but don't update to 1.7 if you want to stay on the server, because i might not update until bukkit is updated.

    Currency

The currency system works like this. You mine for diamond and iron like you would in singleplayer. But wait? What's this? Gold? It's almost useless! Take it over to mcjosh and get 30 slimeballs for it! Now you have money. Feel free to bargain with other players, and, if possible, buy items with gold instead of slime. Like sticking to using only dollar bills instead of paying in pennies. I have a shop without any spawned items, and some items are meant to be overpriced. I am telling you this so you can get a feel for the value of one slime. One diamond costs 50 slime, one redstone costs 2. A piece of coal is worth 2-3, depending on how much I have.

    Rules

Rules are not that hard to follow, you have probably heard most of these somewhere before. First, no editing of anyone elses area. This includes houses and any other structure, as well as editing area around their land. One's land is defined by them, it is usually (and should be) the immediate area around their house. A pernon's mine counts as their area, you can kill people who are in a tunnel you built IF they have a way of getting out and chose to stay in. When two tunnels connect, block the connection and change direction. No editing of what someone else built. Pvp is currently enabled, but random killing will get you jailed. When someone is in your house, and you have given them fair warning to get out, you can kill them by any means and give their stuff back to them if you are having a nice day. You MAY NOT kill in a public area without permission from your opponent. Do not be a **** to other players. If you are not being generally nice as you are expected, you will be jailed. X-ray is strictly forbidden, and while there is no way for me to directly tell you are using it, on a small server like this it is easy to notice when things aren't adding up. You will get banned and your stuff will get handed out to random people.

    Entry

Getting into the server is as easy as putting in the IP address obviously, but you can't build until I and my mods approve of you. My current host computer is NOT a very nice computer, I usually do not experience much lag at all, but I must tell you slots are very limited.

    Community

We here at birchcraft really love birch trees. We really hate regular trees. They are cancer. I used WorldEdit to remove all normal trees from the main town, and we planted birch trees. You probably won't have to walk far to find a normal tree, so you can cut those down too. You MAY NOT plant a regular sapling in an area inhabited by other people. You will probably get jailed for spreading cancer. I give out free birch saplings on request, so feel free to ask. The community is a very nice one, and we encourage using skype to communicate. My skype name is josh1593557. I am open to ventrilo or teamspeak, but I don't see a reason and don't know how to use them. I use worldguard to protect my house, and if you want your house/building protected you can ask.

To speed up the process of being accepted into the community, you may post your age, IGN, skills, screenies of things you've built, skype name, and why you chose BirchCraft.

    Feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Beauty

We have not yet added some great spawn welcome center and the town is made mainly out of cobblestone. There are random buildings everywhere. The only things beautiful about this server are the birch trees and the wool sphere that I call the moon. If you want to be on a server with amazing things already built for you, this is probably not the server for you. If you are intredasted in making the server look more beautiful by adding public buildings, i will give you materials to do so and reward you afterwards. Server uptime is pretty high, it only goes down when the power goes out or when I am updating critical components. All in all it's 80-90%.

MAJOR EDIT: Decided to add whitelist. Had two griefers come on and try to do something. They were hacking etc. They couldnt even get out of jail. But if i wasnt on, and no mods were on, someone i had recently trusted could just have a grief party. The server backs up automatically and saves automatically. I started a new map also. Still unsure of whether i am going to revert back to my old one.

I recently switched from using hamachi to not using hamachi, and I think I did something wrong.
:Sheep: I set my computers IP to be static, and I forwarded external and internal ports 25565 to my computer's internal IP address. I went in server.properties and changed the IP there to my internal IP address and the port number to 25565. When I use a laptop on the same wireless network (my host computer uses ethernet) to try to connect to the external IP address of the computer with the port number, it says Failed to connect to the server Connection refused: connect. When one of my friends tries to connect he gets Failed to connect to the server connection timed out: connect. When I use the same laptop on the same network but instead enter the internal IP address with the port number, it tries to connect and the server log says mcjosh logged in as entity number 1234, but the play screen never shows up on my laptop and i get end of stream or read timed out. This may just be a server problem, as I am using CraftBukkit 740. Is there any thing i forgot to do or did wrong? The server log showed nothing out of the ordinary(it did not give me any information when people couldn't get on). Thanks in advance.
Edit: I forwarded those ports with the protocol as "Both" instead of "TCP" or "UDP"

This is awesome, I'm not a modder, but if I was, I'd make this.
Archer all the way. (I would have to guilt people into being soldiers) :Diamond: :Diamond: :Diamond:
edit: The archer needs an ammo box or arrow generation spell
    soldiers need autohealing iron swords

I have an amazing idea for you. Use the single player commands mod (maybe with SP worldedit) to speed up processes. In-game INV editing, time of day adjust, instantly extinguish all fire on map, and much, much more. Worldedit may take it too far because it is more of an in-game map editor.

    Google search.

    GO.

It has already been suggested in much better ways.

Give me a link or words for me to search, and I would be glad to.

    Google search for Minecraft entities.

Great! This is exactly what I was looking for, I didn't think anyone else had this idea. Thank you guys for the help and ahemconstructive criticism. I don't think it's possible for me to close a thread, but i guess it will die on its own?

I'm going to save you from the trolls here on the MC forums. This is not Roblox and no one wants it to be. Your suggestion is good, but not controlling the boats. You'd be forced to push it if anything, or have a boat in the center that controls it as said before.

I'm sorry, but I only adapted a way to control the movement direction of a ship. On a larger ship, getting on a boat in the center and holding a for 30 seconds is a very inconvenient way to turn 90 degrees. An optional control system, some like the original boat and some like the very nicely designed map in another sandbox game, would be a way to compromise.

As I said before, I don't see this happening. This is not like other sandbox games, and be happy to have boats. A control system would take up a lot of code and would be very glitchy, look at minecarts, you get in em and you ride them and they're extremely glitchy, even though youre not controlling them.

Yes, I will admit this is far fetched and almost impossible for a game like minecraft, but at the least, a cork block, a special type of building material to place on top of cork, a sail, and a simple control system would not be too far out there. Of course, in order for this to work, water would have to be updated to allow drag and special relations with cork, which adds to the distantness of this idea. If it were ever added, the possibilities would be endless, and sailing would be accomplished. That is what makes me think it would be worth the time. But hey, it's up to notch.

    Explanation Continued.
This cork idea could also see the addition of submarines, if an engine was added into the game. Because sails are such an appealing idea for me, these engines should have a slow speed. The amount of drag should only affect the engine to where if there is too much drag the engine will stop moving your craft and you would have to add another one. Your craft will move at a set speed as long as it has enough engines to move. Also, I will address weight. Since wooden ships look cool and cobblestone ships would be impractical, weight may be a good idea. Maybe only certain blocks could be placed on a floating mass? (Iron blocks would be fine considering how rare they are compared to wood)

Just wondering, how would you control these boats? I wouldn't want to push it, or have to use a boat in the center to push it.

I think the easiest and most practical way of controlling it would be to sit in a captains seat, and use wasd to control the movement. As in a game I was playing on Roblox, when you hit the command to turn left, the boat would start turning left even if you got out of the seat. You would have to get back in the seat and disable it to stop the turn. Also turn speed and movement speed should be determined by how many sails you have(and/or how large they are) and how much cork you have underwater.

Ok the idea of sailing has been bothering me for a while, and i have seen threads with this idea, but they are locked or dead. This would be a block like cork or driftwood, which is affected by gravity, and any block placed on top of it is affected by gravity. The catch is the cork sinks more and more with each block placed on top of it. Note that placing a cork on top of a cork would increase max load, but the ocean can only be so deep, and a floating fortress wouldn't be able to actually move anywhere, and it would become more practical to just build an island. This would make sailing and ships generally possible and customizable.
If you don't want huge battleships in your servers, build a sea barrier. Make canals and bridges limiting the size of ships. A sail system implemented along with the blocks would be all else that is required. Feedback is much appreciated!
