Ati cards use an entirely different number/model system, so they're not comparable. Chronologically speaking, the Ati 4000-series cards are several generations newer than the Nvidia 5000-series.
edit: I was looking up requirements for L4D2, and they state a geforce 6600 as minimum spec. Your 5000-series may not support all the shader functions for the game, and your issue might not be reparable without replacing that board... still, try updated drivers first before writing it off.
Alternatively you can just use the "verify integrity of local files" from the properties menu of the game. It does the same thing w/o wasting all the bandwidth. It sounds like you're having texture issues, so if one is corrupt that would fix it. The other thing is making sure you have the latest video drivers.
The PC is my favorite platform for a multitude of reasons, but here are the primaries:
1 - Mods. I can modify and alter my games with community-based mods to my heart's content without worrying about getting banned or any of that nonsense.
2 - Controls. I *hate* using thumbsticks to aim in shooters... the mouse is completely superior in my less-than-humble opinion. It's also more suitable for strategy games, rpgs, and most things except sports games. For those, I can use a gamepad on my PC as well, so it's no loss there either.
3 - Expandability. So maybe some fancy new game comes out, and I can't quite run them at full settings. Now say later on I upgrade my video card, pop in some more RAM, a new CPU, whatever... now all my older games can be run at higher settings, making them look better than before if I decide to replay them.
4 - Community. This is the biggie; it's always been easier for me to find good players and teammates in PC games. That's not to say that there aren't annoying kids/griefers/morons/etc, but they are less prevalent.
I know I'm impressed. Looks like you just need a bit of fine tuning with the booster carts, and now that you have the main line laid out it should be relatively easy to add rail stations later. One other (minor) thing I'd improve is trying to put some fencing up in the grassy areas to keep the wildlife off the tracks. Looks great otherwise, excellent job.
Had a large haul while mining, turned a corner and ran into a creeper. It didn't kill me, but I freaked out and ran the other direction... right into a lava pit. Everything I was carrying was instantly vaporized as result.

I must applaud you on your good taste. The sixth entry into the series remains my favorite to this day, and one of my favorite games of all time.
