posted a message on The Server Makers Guide

Hello everyone, I'm making this post to (hopefully) help guide future server owners through the complex process of making a server, from the beginning to the very end. Any suggestions for this guide (or questions you would like answered) would be greatly appreciated, this will hopefully be an ongoing project so be sure to check back every once in awhile for updates, changes, or just better ways of doing the same things. Lately I've become a believer in the saying "don't complain about it if you won't do anything to help fix it" and how it relates to the Minecraft server industry as a whole. So, without further adieu, I present The Server Makers Guide.

    ----- [ * ] -----

Section 1 - Planning: Before you even think about hosting

The most common mistake I see when servers start is the lack of prior planning, this is extremely important because when you start paying for a server (if applicable, more on this later) you're going to be in go mode. If planned properly setting up your server can be a relatively painless process, but if you don't plan ahead and rush into the monumental task there is bound to be some issues and plenty of stress for you to endure.

You should start your planning by thinking of what you want your server to have, it's perfectly fine to shoot for the moon because most of the time you're only going to get half way there and if you aimed low you're going to get a low quality result, just make a small text file with your ideas, try to come up with as many as possible. When you finish coming up with ideas try sorting them into three categories: Basic ideas (the stuff required just for the server to function such as a ban manager, advertisement prevention, etc.), Advanced ideas (the ideas you would need a developer to implement but certainly seem possible), and finally Moonshot ideas (stuff that is crazy, unique, or just otherwise probably not going to happen when you launch). By sorting your ideas into these three categories you'll find it much easier later on to prioritize what needs to get done when.

Now that you've got some ideas in your head you can start to research what plugins your server is going to use, this is just to get a rough idea of what you'll be using or if you'll need to get a developer to create it, write down the plugin names next to each of the ideas you proposed or think of the features you would like a developer to incorporate in a plugin for that feature. The more time you spend researching what plugins you'll be using, the less painful getting it all running will be, it seems like it wouldn't make that great of a difference but it really does.

Congratulations, you're done with this section of the guide, and now you should have a rough idea of how your server is going to work and the technology that is going to be required to make it happen.

    ----- [ * ] -----

Section 2 - Hosting: What am I going to run my server on?

Now, I know what you're thinking: "This is easy! I can do this without some stupid guide telling me how to do it!". Nobody is going to stop you from doing that, but if you're looking to create a great quality server I recommend you keep reading because after working with Minecraft servers for several years I've learned some of the tricks hosting companies will try to use, and I hope to inform you and your decision on how to host your server.

Let me begin with this: Hosting is never free. I'm sorry if I ruined your dream of making a server but it's the cold hard truth, please don't get fooled into using one of the "free" hosts that are around because in the end you will regret it. Your server files might get deleted, the hosting company may just suddenly-- without warning-- disappear from the face of the planet, or you might learn that their customer support isn't very, well, supportive. There are many things that are just plain awful about these free hosts and I warn you to stay far away from them.

So, now that I've covered that extremely important point let's get into what you should be looking for when you get a host:
    • Don't be fooled by low prices and high RAM into using one of the newer companies, not all of them will succeed and if they go down your server is going with them. I've had this happen to me personally and it isn't fun, your files are gone for good if this happens.
    • Just because the plans have high RAM doesn't mean they're good. Yes, you read that correctly and I've seen many fall victim to this issue. A hosting company might give you eight gigabytes of RAM but if the CPU your server is running on is being overworked (server overcrowding is a serious problem, some companies do what I refer to as "Server Cramming" which is where they take a high end server with a great CPU and loads of RAM and pack a couple dozen servers on it or more and force them all to use the same CPU and resources) then your server will be slow regardless of your RAM.
    • If you find a host you really like take the time to email their support team and ask them about why you should choose them, do not act like you've already chosen them, make them convince you that they're what you need, if they don't respond within a day or two then they're not serious about their business and I suggest you find another company.
    • If you find a host that looks good then go for it, you can always change in the future, however I recommend only getting one month at first to see if there are problems so you don't get stuck with them for six months (or longer) if there is issues.

Congratulations on finishing Section 2 of my guide, I hope you learned how to select a good host and perhaps learned a few of their tricks.

You have reached the end of my guide for now, thanks for reading!

    This is an ongoing project.

So, please expand your post so applicants know what they're going to be asked, perhaps include some requirements? Just providing an IP is not sufficient to attract high quality, non-corrupt, staff members.

So, just based on what I see your server appears worthy of taking the time to apply for.

Anyway, your whole setup looks pretty clean and well thought out so here's some reasons why I thought it would be good for people to take the time to apply for you:

    • In general, your site looks very clean and the formatting meets standard requirements and goes a bit beyond.
    • You created a separate forums account for your server which will result in overall better quality in forum posts, which is something I recommend.
    • Your application is short and sweet which makes it so that it won't take literally two hours (or more, however this is very acceptable on servers that have a sizeable player base or have been around for a long time) to completely fill to a decent standard.
    • Your setup looks all around in general very clean, thought out, and professional.

I hope that you find success in the Minecraft server industry, it's hard, unforgiving, and rough at first but if you strike gold, have a little luck, and gain players you will really have a shot at becoming one of the greats.

    Until we meet again,

After looking at this post I would recommend redoing it, that formatting isn't going to attract any decent staff members, just hunters and griefers.

Don't take it as offensive or anything but please, reformat that post.

The server really needs new players, also to clear up some confusion you must play as a regular player at least 3 days BEFORE applying for a staff position. Sorry if this causes any inconvenience but we try to avoid griefers.
