Ironically, people are already starting to say that Fortnite is dying as I've seen several such videos come up in my suggestion box recently - and it isn't even a year old yet (plus it heavily benefits from being free-to-play, just as China registered 100+ million registered users of a free version of Minecraft in less than a year); in fact searching YouTube for "fortnite dying" gave me nearly 7 million results:
IMO, people just like to say that game X is dying (which it will eventually), primarily because they have gotten bored of it themselves, or their friends or favorite YouTubers quit playing. Or a new update has "ruined" the game (the description on one of the videos listed above mentions a new patch - which is no different from what we see with Minecraft, yet the actual number of players who quit over updates like 1.9 is likely small).
By the way, this shows how many results there are for "minecraft dying" on YouTube - for a game which is over 10 times older than Fortnite (I was expecting to see many more results given how often claims that the game is dying come up):

l think yes because of the fortnite - who would really think about minecraft with guns ?
Yet again, Fortnite is TOTALLY different game, even though it has some building aspect in it as well, it still isn't anywhere close to what Minecraft allows it's players to do. Fortnite lacks may aspects, that Minecraft has, just like Minecraft lacks many aspects, that Fortnite has. Fortnite is popular now just because of sudden craze for Battle Royale gamemode, it's not popular for being "competitor" for Minecraft. PERIOD.
Stop comparing Minecraft with Fortnite, as they are 2 totally different games.
And YET AGAIN, if Minecraft would be dying, there wouldn't be ANY new updates being released ON ANY platform/edition. But oh, look! 1.13 is being released for Java edition this week, AND 1.14 and 1.15, even some parts of 1.16 has been already planned out (of course we, the players don't know that much about them yet, as Mojang don't need to tell anything about them yet)!
Let me tell you SoullessSnowMan the differences in these 2 games:
Minecraft is 1st person survival (which has creative and adventure aspects as well, thanks to different gamemodes) sandbox game, that allows you to do, heck, pretty much anything you want. You want to build awesome castle? You can do that! You can explore Nether dimension? You can do that! You want to explore caves (which could always be bit bigger, than what they are now), guess what! YES! You can do THAT TOO!
Fortnite is not 1st person survival sandbox game that allows you to do whatever you want, Fortnite is mainly 3rd person Battle Royale multiplayer game, in which you need to kill other players to win the round. Yes, you can build whatever you want from "mats" you gather, but that's practically all, that is has in common with Minecraft. Minecraft is slow-ish paced game (at least in Survival, not in PvP), Fortnite is fast paced shooter.
See? 2 totally different games. And either game will not make the other die out. To be honest, I actually see Fortnite dying off way before Minecraft dies, thanks to all hype of Battle Royale games slowly dying off, just like other huge games with different gamemodes have been dying off before Battle Royale craze.
Minecraft is not going anywhere. Fortnite is. The Battle Royale genre will wither slowly away, thanks to every major game studio hopping aboard the craze and over-saturating the genre with dozens of games, that are just copies from previous one. That has happened before, and that happens again.
That being said, I can't deny, that Minecraft wouldn't "die off" on the future, as every game "dies" eventually. Of course there will always be few players, who will play it for as long, as it is possible to play. But it isn't dying yet. And looks like it isn't dying off any time soon either.

In all honesty it sounds like people who claim that the game is dying are just trying to use that to justify their own burnout of the game. Burnout is normal after extended amounts of play time. I started playing the game a few weeks before the 1.6 update dropped over five years ago, and in that time I've taken multiple breaks from the game, or tried out different mod packs and such. There are very few games out there that are still even popular after years of development since launch. Things get stale every now and then. Take a step back. Go play some different games. Maybe try the game again in a few months. Or don't come back at all. But don't just assume the game is a lost cause because of it. Yes, the golden era of the game is gone, and while many of the og youtubers who made content about the game are gone, that doesn't mean new ones haven't taken their place. And while everything with youtube has signaled the end of an era for many, that doesn't mean a new, better one, can't arise.
As someone who jumps in and out of playing Minecraft I cannot agree more. Last time I fired it up was before 1.12 dropped and just came back about a week ago. From my own little perspective the game is still getting large content updates and I can still play it with my friends and that's all I need.

TheMasterCaver posted a message on Is Minecraft Dying...?Posted in: DiscussionThe only thing that is dying or declining are these forums:
For comparison, check out the Minecraft subreddit, which has far more users active at any time despite far fewer members/subscribers, and they are far more interactive (more submissions/comments over time per user):
Or even better, the Feed The Beast (modded Minecraft) subreddit, which has only 54,000 members yet gets 100+ times more activity than these forums (ironically, according to the Wayback Machine the forums have gained over 50,000 members this year but I doubt that most of those are real people because the level of activity does not support it): -

The game is dying face it
The game is not dying, face IT.
Why the game is dying?
1. Fornite Totally different game, even with some base building it aren't even close to what Minecraft is.
2. KeemStar ruined the games rep How so? You do know, that not everyone in the world know who KeemStar is, or actually give flying *bleeb* about who KeemStar is?
3. The pedo youtuber scandal in 2016 Now tell me how exactly "Ped YouTuber scandal" affects Minecraft?
4. updates are crap Your opinion, not my, and FYI, I'm not the only one, who thinks, that the new updates are actually awesome.
5. Minecraft dying on youtube. Yet again, Minecraft "dying on YouTube" doesn't mean, that the game itself would be dying.
6. hackers Hackers suck, yes. But they don't affect "game dying", as they are mainly pests in large servers. You don't want to be bothered about hackers? Don't play on large servers, DUH.
Yet again someone, who thinks, that their opinions are facts, and the only real and valuable facts.
Yet again: If the game is dead, or dying FOR you, it DOESN'T mean, that the game would be dead, or dying FOR OTHERS.
NOW DEAL WITH THE FACT, THAT YOUR OPINION IS NOT THE ONLY OPINION.

You are all missing the point of this post entirely. This isn’t meant for you guys who still are obsessed with the game and enjoy it at the fullest. (which is still the majority of players surrounding the game) Honestly good for you, you’re still finding enjoyment out of the game.
Oh, so now we are obsessed with the game? No. Just no. Get your head out of where ever it is, and start to think: Even though someone likes the game, it doesn't mean, that they would be obsessed about it. For example, I am not "obsessed" about it, in fact, I haven't played the game for few days, since I do have other games to play too.
This is meant for people who have had enough with this game and miss the old way of doing things. It’s not about wanting to play beta 1.3_01, I was referencing the first version I played, and my original single player world.
Oh, good for you. Why you didn't say that in the first place, rather than saying "We will never get to log onto our Minecraft Beta 1.3_01 world again."
Huh? You write other, but mean something totally different.
Its not aboutjust a version of the game, but the whole community surrounding it. It has dissolved immensely comoared to how it was when Minecraft was in its prime in popularity.
"Dissolved" is rather extreme, as what it is, is more of a bloated amount of servers, that runs on different versions of the game (yet, very few of them are running on older releases, like beta), which has more or less divided the community, making it look smaller, than what it actually is. Of course, there are the players, who play single player only. But that's different story.
It was was not meant to “generalize” every player, but for people who feel this way, can relate to what I’m saying. Hence the “we”.
Sorry if you all feel so arttacked and offended, I was stating MY and several others’ opinion and how we feel about the game lately. Take it or leave it. No need to get your knickers in a bunch y’all.
Of course you have rights to have your own individual opinions, but you should of thought, if the "we" is correct way to put it. When you should of have wrote it like: "We, who prefer older versions, like beta 1.3_01...". Not just "we", since that's easy to misunderstand, like you saw there.
The game might be dead to you, and lost it's "spark" to you, but not for everyone, that's why "we" is not enough on this occasion.

TheMasterCaver posted a message on An open letter to MinecraftPosted in: DiscussionNo, it is not "we" - it is "you" - who has a problem. Millions of new players are experiencing their first nights, first multiplayer experiences, and so on every year - the game is more successful that it ever has been - including old players coming back to play again:
Minecraft Sales Hit 144 Million, Mojang Boasts of 74 Million Active Monthly Players
Not ones to be outdone, Mojang and Microsoft have revealed that sales of Minecraft have reached a staggering 144 million across all platforms, with a hugely impressive retention of 74 million active monthly players.
The news comes just weeks after PUBG eclipsed the total PC sales of Minecraft. Despite this, Minecraft’s success still shows no signs of slowing. The last official figure we heard was 122 million copies sold as of February 2017, meaning an average of 2 million copies of Minecraft sold every month. This compares to 1.7 million per month the prior year. Far from Minecraft’s success waning, there's actually a growth in the rate of sales.
“We just recently set a new record in December for monthly active users, so now we’re at 74 million monthly active users — and that’s really a testament to people coming back to the game, whether it’s through the game updates or bringing in new players from across the world,” said Minecraft’s head honcho Helen Chiang, to PopSugar. “That’s really our goal, to keep building the community that we have.”
Nope, it is just you (and a small handful of vocal minorities who constantly post stuff like this and make the forums look bad; no wonder they are so inactive with everybody moving on to places like Reddit, where you can actually downvote; enough bad karma even gets you shadow banned). Same for features like the 1.9 combat (the vast majority of servers are on 1.9 and later) - or the baseless blaming of Microsoft for the "demise" of the game when they have had no influence on its development.
Check this out, and I've been playing for over 5 years: I spent 52.82 days playing Minecraft in 2017
Nope, just you again (and I have a playstyle which most people consider to be extremely repetitive and boring). -

BigDog1984 posted a message on Something NewPosted in: Discussionpersonally, there are lots a great MC You Tubers out there that cover anything and everything and most of the content overlap or is unoriginal. If you are going to make a channel specifically for MC, do it on content you like bc you enjoy it. By you stating that you dont want the fame side of it already tells me that fame is somewhat on your mind and that deep down inside you hope to gain fame from it. Make videos you would want to watch if it were you on the other side of the screen watching back. Expect there to be little amount of viewers until you gain a following of subs. It's ok to ask others what kind of content they would like to see, but in the end make what you would want to watch if you were watching You tube vids. chances are there are more people out there wanting to see the same things you wanted to see done on MC but is not posted on YT to watch.
you can start out with a pair of gaming headphones with a built in mic for your audio and a screen capture software to record your MC gameplay and even a HD webcam if you want to be seen. there are free open source video editing software out there you can use to edit the footage. You can then work on advancing you content and editing skills to create your own style that sets you apart from most of the other YT uploaders. Overtime you can upgrade to an Audio interface with a decent condencer mic, good headphones, build a massive gaming/editing station, purchase a more professional audio/video editing software and a fancy DSLR/Mirrorless Camera for HD video. point is, most of the famous gaming YT stars started out in the same place you did and built it up from there.
good luck on your journey

fishg posted a message on Fishing OverhaulPosted in: Suggestions
While I'd typically add anything that further kills AFK fishing, this has the counter effect of forcing good players to fish away from their bases if they want to have a chance towards treasure. Also it isn't that hard to move a fishing farm.
I was originally not going to make a banner, but considering the support so far I probably will.
A common misconception. You see fishing is a gigantic conspiracy, we don't actually take the bait these genetically engineered robo-fish do. The humans think they are tasting fish, but really its just a combination of protein and their trash. The more humans fish, the less they suspect of our secret plan to overthrow them. - To post a comment, please login.

With all due respect though the mcf/subreddit do have a lot to do with the game, as these are our two primary means of communication as a community, and the community's involvement with the game has everything to do with Minecraft and whether or not its dying. Just clarifying my previous talking points. Not meant as a deterrent but rather a talking piece to the subject of the thread itself.

Considering the nature of a shield biome, would it not make more sense for it to snow? And I like the idea of adding a new block to the game, in this situation. Does permafrost have any properties? Soul sand gives slowness, for example. Is there anything unique about permafrost? Maybe it transforms nearby water blocks into ice?
And what mobs, if any, spawn in this biome (aside from monsters due to light values)

I play on smaller smp vanilla(ish) servers, and all of them had a discord (ts before) with a music bot. I'm not someone who's any good with coding, so I'm unsure if playing music in-game server wide is even possible or not. But programs like Discord allow for music streaming like that to be possible.

I'd like to point out that the argument that the game is dying because many Youtubers don't play it anymore, is invalid and unrelated to Minecraft. Youtube has been making some controversial changes to its monetization and search policies, mainly in an effort to crack down on offensive and somewhat extremist content. This started at the beginning of 2017, but peaked after a certain Youtuber decided to post a rather offensive video back in December of that year. Youtube has also changed its policies for obtaining ad revenue. In the past, all you needed was 10,000 views minimum to start generating revenue. Now, it's something like 4,000 views a month and 1,000 subscribers a month. This policy doesn't really apply to the guys who have multiple millions of subscribers, but to the guys who have 500,000, 100,000, 10,000, or less? Looks like they're. The platform doesn't seem to be as open for new creators to come in and make it big like it used to be 4 or 5 years ago. A lot of content creators run full time on YouTube. It's their business. And with the way YouTube has recoded their search preferences as to what a given user will find when he searches for something, it's not lucrative anymore to push out Minecraft related content when providing for yourself and possibly a family comes first.
Think of it like this. You own a small store and you carry this brand of cookies that are your absolute favorite. But lately they're not selling so well, but another brand is and it's something you could easily import into your store. Do you keep the brand you love, or switch to the other one so that you can keep providing for yourself?
This answer addresses the YouTube side of things. Content Creators getting burned out or falling off the map has been discussed prior.

Pre5 for 1.13 dropped a few days ago, so hopefully the update is launched within the next week..

Mojang has a database of every name in circulation. They should also be able to have the account's activity in record, but if not they could start recording it should they implement a system like this.
Rather than having to open a support ticket, they could tie in this process to the already existing name change system, as Bad suggested above. Let's say, that when an account is inactive for 365 days, the username tied to the account becomes available for current players to select. So, for example, mcslayer2400 stopped playing mine craft on June 30, 2017. On July 1, 2018, his username will be available for another account to have. Should another player want to make that their username, the former account would default to something involving their uuid, like the first few digits or something, such as, "mcuser12ab".
Bear in mind I know nothing about how Mojang (Microsoft) operates their servers. So I really don't know how feasible something like this is.
1
I play heavily on multiplayer survival servers. So building a big ole fancy grinder isn't always an option with the lag and lower mob spawn rates and whatnot. I like the idea of being able to craft it, though for what you put into obtaining those materials I think you should get a little more out of it, say 4 gunpowder? Though what I really think would help is if blazes dropped gunpowder.
2
There are so many mechanics and elements within the game that I really wish Mojang would just spend an update cycle reworking and providing more functionality. Minecarts and rails are one of such elements. Everyone overlooks minecarts for travel now with boats and elytras being the preferred option, obviously. But to me there's still something fun and exciting about setting up rails to different parts of my bases. I would reiterate my opposition to this thread, as that would be redundant. I will however state my overall approval of this suggestion. Very well thought out. I think Minecraft needs some of these mechanics to be readdressed and reworked in the light of recent updates. Provide the community with even more to work with. Nice job.
