I think the poll is more of a "how old are minecraft forum users"
I'm guessing that most of the younger minecrafters don't come on here and most older people don't, well, play pc games.
The problem with coal is that it is non renewable, but it is so common that you'll never mine it all.
Charcoal would be preferable if you run a dedicated system of producing it, basically a tree farm and a bunch of furnaces to smelt the logs, it would output a constant, reliable and potentially huge amount of charcoal.
Either way it really depends on the player, some people prefer mining, some prefer planting/chopping
Also, if you look at it from a conservationists point of view, it incredibly ironic that you would plant a tree so you could burn coal.
I can't stand not picking up a rescource, because I don't like the idea of it disappearing while I'm away, if my inventory fills up while mining I will get out my flint and steel and incinerate any left on the ground.
I also back up my save files every day in case the computer crashes while saving
Also whenever I post on any forum, if a word looks like it's misspelled I'll google it to make sure (this one isn't in minecraft, but I did it 3 times during this post,)
I saw one of my friends playing it on another friends computer
"whats that?"
"wtf are you an idiot haven't you heard of minecraft?!"

"THIS GAME IS FREAKING AWESOME"
My luckiest: Generates new map. Spawns 6 blocks away from an open cave. Looks down. Sees mossy cobblestone. "HOLY SH*T!". Immediately makes tools. 3 mins later uncovers a roof-less dungeon 1 block under the surface. Checks that peaceful is on. Finds 2 in the dungeon filled with , , ,lots of string and a bucket. Finds coal and surrounds mob spawner with torches. Going to build a mob trap under the spawner with the infinite water block found 3 blocks away
* night time*
Builds small cave close to dungeon. Notices glow in distance some 100 blocks away. Walks over and finds a large lava pool on the surface.
