It isn't that the option isn't present, its that literally you try to update it in any way, forced or otherwise, and the download freezes midway through.
Exactly, no matter what I try, it will always stop at a random point while downloading the .minecraft jar file.
Here's one, I haven't been able to download the .minecraft jar since 1.1.
Can't skip the update, 'cause it'll load to around 90% and lock up.
I have:
Turned off the antivirus and tried to update from both browser and desktop multiple times
Uninstalled, reinstalled, then tried to update
Changed computers
Force update
Tried again in DIFFERENT CITY
Every single time ends the same way:
Error, connection reset
It pops up after stopping at a random percent during the .minecraft jar download.
ive had this as well, for me it was my anti virus, i use AVG
First thing to try is add minecraft as an exception, for AVG (tools, advanced settings, resident sheild, add exception
This didnt work for me so i had to temporarily disable AVG (same menu, tools advanced settings, temporily disable AVG protection) then download minecraft (should work in launcher) then imediatly re-enable protection
OS: Windows Vista
Anti-Virus: AVG (full, not free)
Ever since the release of 1.1, I have been completely unable to update Minecraft. The update stops installing at a random point during the install of the jar file.
I have used the following methods to try to fix this:
Uninstall then re-install
Turned off the firewall before updating
Force update
Update through browser
None of these methods so far have yielded results, and I am becoming frustrated with my distinct inability to play what I have paid for. I would like someone to help me to fix this.
Edit: Also to be noted, I am also incapable of skipping the update. If I choose not to, it goes to about 98% (estimated) on the loading bar, then promptly locks up.
This has been a problem since the 1.1 update. I haven't been able to play it since it came out.
I'm on Windows Vista and I've tried every feasible method of fixing this. I've deleted the entire thing and re-installed it, I've tried to force the update, and I've even cut off my firewall and then tried to install it.
I have yet to get it to go past 12% despite all of that.

Tried it, multiple times. Doesn't work.
AVG is not the issue for me.

Not at fault, though. Tried downloading from a comp with Windows 8, still failed.

I also am experiencing the same problem when I skip the update and cannot play single-player.
I have deleted and re-installed Minecraft numerous times and I still experience this problem.
