So, I plan to have my map done by the cutoff date, but won't be able to post it until either Monday night or Tuesday morning. Hopefully that'll be alright! Otherwise, stuff is coming swimmingly. Glad to see a few maps being posted, though I'm a bit disappointed to see arguments already - reviews are reviews; let's not complain about them, eh? After all, there's still a day and change left, people can still change stuff.

I fullheartadly agree. Just a note though, Sylf is in Australia so the cut off date for him was yesterday. He started a day early, ended a day early I think.

I would have liked to participate this time around, but it came up kinda suddenly, and I didn't really have time to prepare, but I look foward to seeing all your submissions and joining in for next time.

For now this is all I have to offer to the community:

A brand new banner! Not as good as the last one I made imo but still new and stuff.

I wanted to participate in some way okay, so this is my contribution.

Also, this one has the proper updated link so when clicked it will actually send you to the reduxed strawberry jam.

Well the map is still currently being made, but even when that's done, he has to wait on some beta testers (Me being one) to give feedback so he can balance it out before it's released to the public in the final version.

I would just say patience is a virtue.

I personally hand checked all 31 original pages of the strawberry jam before it was locked and the 34 pages of the reduxed version just to make sure, and found your presence nowhere mentioned up until your post here today.

So like I said you seem like a new face maybe because I've never seen or heard you mentioned at all in the strawberry jam up until now.

Alright I've had about enough. This is, and always has been a friendly environment. That should never change. I've made my points you've made your's, and if you think I'm wrong for saying Technic's criticism isn't constructive, you're welcome to join my ignore list.

Let's just agree to disagree buddy.

People aren't in here to get feedback on their styles, they're here to challenge themselves with a time limit and work on concepts that may not fit in their own maps.

Yes. All of that, but in a friendly environment so they can continue to improve and challenge themselves. Honestly I've been around this town for a long time before this got transferred over to Drago, and you seem like a fairly new face to the Strawberry Jam.

People come to map here for a few reasons: To challenge themselves, to improve, to show off there talent, to be involved with other map makers in the community, and most of all: To have fun.

    was a pretty crappy map

Doesn't improve anyone's map jam experience in the slightest.

I'm not willing to argue this further. My points are there, and only hope Drago decides to add my rule.

"The purpose of constructive criticism is to improve the outcome."

I'd say all of this is constructive...

If the purpose of constructive criticism is to improve the outcome, you should look at what I said.

"This isn't beta testing for a map that will be revised later, this a one time thing so any feedback should help the Mapper improve in some way for future maps."

None of what he said would help Sylf improve for another map. Most of it was in beta testing style which works great if the mapper plans on revising the map, but since that's not how it works here, the outcome that the constructive criticism should help is the mapper and his skills, not the map because that will never be edited or fixed.

It's about the advice you can take away from the experience to improve yourself, not the advice that serves only to tell you that a map built in 48 hours is "too rushed" or is just flat out "A crappy map".

If I was the mapper that got that review I wouldn't be improving at all based on the feedback because none of it helped.

Can we have this added to the rules Drago?

Do not give feedback if it doesn't benefit or help the mapper.

I feel as if this is an environment meant to help people and have fun mapping, so people should not be leaving reviews/critiques that don't benefit anyone.

    Whelp, I'm done!

Air was a pretty crappy map, to say the least.

Sure, there were custom mobs, and nice aesthetics, but this map is beatable within half an hour. And while it is a "Mini-CTM", this one proved to be extra mini.

There was little difficulty, but there was also little creativity.

This is not really an air based map, it is simply floating isles, and nothing more.

However, the aesthetics in the map are relatively sound, but that is all I will give him. I was not gaping in awe at the beautiful areas.

    5/10

No offense, Sylf. But a bad map is a bad map. That's not to say you can't improve. :)

I think that was pretty god damn harsh.

I've been following this jam since it's start and made the original banner for it, so I've seen how everyone interacts with each other during the Jams. The point of this is to show off your skills to other mappers, get some mapping practice, advice and constructive criticism.

Do not give feedback if it doesn't benefit the mapper. This isn't beta testing for a map that will be revised later, this a one time thing so any feedback should help the Mapper improve in some way for future maps.

I rate your critique skills 1/10 in this such environment.

Not only was it rude and condescending but offered no constructive criticism that would benefit anyone. You only gave what you felt was wrong with map and gave no suggestions to improve which makes your critique 100% useless.

Normally I'd shrug what you say off, because this is the internet and people claim stuff like that all the time. But, I've seen you around the community so I'll just assume it's true. Aren't you an admin on the Hypixel server? Thought I saw you there yesterday.

Also, apparently we live somewhat close to each other based on the MC Forums location. Do you live in downtown The Void or the suburbs of The Void?

Random loot, plain environments, poor use of custom mobs, weak balancing, too many spawners, bad last intersection.

I'm not here to fight with any of you. I respect all of your opinions, I hope none of you take offense to my opinions either as the can be argued (Or is that Sarcasm? *Wink [you'll Never know]), I only hope you'll take my opinions for just that, and not treat me too harshly for a different opinion.

The random loot annoyed me a bit, the environment was a little plain, but as was the sacrifice in making a map with only 1 block top used as a base block and theme of fire and lava. If it's considered plain, the same could be said about Kazio Caverns. Both IM and Kazio Caverns, had mainly 1 base block with the same theme throughout the entire map but (IMHO) both maps made up for it with the interestingly designed and shaped areas.

The use of custom mobs was the first map where he had access to such customization and power in mobs, so it was a first attempt at using them. Nobody can do things right always first time around, especially since 1.5 wasn't out when he started development on the map.

Admittedly, the amount of spawners was grotesque, but I still found the balancing to work and found the map enjoyable even if I died a few times to cheap deaths. (It is a map series called Super Hostile after all!)

    Quote from Icelate

I would like to hear what he was trying to do in IM that was different from other CTM linear maps.

    Quote from Icelate

Wow that's such a huge step!

I think it actually is a huge step. Mechanically the entire way the player plays the game and how hard he has to work to get to the top of the metaphorical food chain is decided by the way the custom mobs were made, and this was his first map to flirt with such ideas.

In this map he did some unique things that he's not done in his maps before.

First official map to use Fleecy Mobs as well as Fleecy Boxes, first linear branching map to not have the standard intersection all the way through,
first map that's linear branching and purely underground to have an area that's hundreds of blocks across so it's hard to see the walls and ceiling that's got enough room for exploration and tons to find in your efforts for exploring, first map to be linear branching and making almost the entire thing lapse back around like a snake in a giant ring, first map to introduce practical mob farming for more than just xp or bones for food he made mob farming have a combat use (Like the flame venom teeth), first map to use and fully implement environmental dangers (Vexian Death blooms and the sort) that must be avoided that can't even be survived in with stacked healing potions (which is big one IMO, it forces the player to actually have to avoid things and plan around it to make progress there's no head on trying to get past a Vexian death bloom.).
They're are probably a few more, but that's all I got for now.

TLDR: I spent way to much time writing this for a tldr. Read it you damn lazies!

Honestly, can't you give him a break? He's had a few flops recently, but when has any major game development studio not had flops before? He's a great mapper, or at least he was, we'll see if he still is, but honestly, you're not very justified in being so rude. He's done what he can, and he'll only continue to make better maps.

tl;dr stop posting hate comments and give him a break.

Agreed. Every time he makes a map he's not getting worse, He's getting better. A few ideas fail, but that just helps him perfect things for future maps making the next one better. In the next one he may find mistakes, but that only continues to perfect the maps he makes as he goes.

All that aside though, I don't really understand why people though Inferno Mines was bad. I played though it a month or two after it became public. I played all the way though, and I thought it was great. The only thing I can think of that was questionable was the random loot system, but even that was a minor mistake in a vast map. He made good use of the possibilities in 1.5 to the mobs to make them more powerful and overall it was a great challenge all the way through.

    TLDR:

    Second Law of Thermodynamics

I thought Inferno Mines was great, what was so bad about it?

YouTube and apparently some of the forums have been plagued with Doomsday Syndrome as of recently. All the people b1tching about how so and so on YouTube doesn't make videos as good as they use to, and that the community is dying, or they think the changes/additions to the channel, or game, or forum, is going to ruin it forever.

People get over it! Changes are scary, but they're not always for the worse!
