Make a list of reasons why you can't or won't do the thing being required of you. Discuss the list with the person controlling your MineCraft play. See what happens. Both of you may learn something.

Did you realize that there are a couple of subforums for "showing off" builds and such? Sometimes I go visit those, and I usually come away with some new notions to pursue (although admittedly, I am not a seasoned player or a redstone ace, like it sounds like you are).

Sometimes when i get super lost and cant find my way back to my base, i switch it to creative mode and try to fly back haha but i don't like to do it very often, sometimes it's just frustrating when i find myself going in circles for hours

    Oh SOOO frustrating, I agree!

Normally I am using Xaeros' map mod, so I can set waypoints, and get back to places of importance. But because it's a game, sometimes, I forget or don't feel like setting a waypoint. Then, never fails that I lose my way and did not write down coordinates, or anything. I hate it when I get that lost. But I don't switch to creative, usually I'll let the world sit there, figuring I'll return another day, and explore more. Most of the time it turns out I haven't wandered all THAT far and I run into my original place again. Maybe that's a phase in my learning this game though. I have been building bigger houses, and ranging farther to find unique scenery, in recent play.

I find I don't like Creative mode very much. I DO, however, love messing around in Survival, but on "Peaceful" difficulty. I delve into "Easy" or "Normal" difficulty now and then in various worlds. And I keep trying to enjoy battles and being scared by creepers or skellies, I really do. However, mostly, like you, sdreamer2000, I am playing MC to relax and enjoy myself. (I DID start playing because my young grandson did, but I think, so far, he has not left Creative mode. We'll see at Thanksgiving, where he's at, I guess)

I like to try out different mods and resource packs. I enjoy the changes in the look of things and the scenery. It is a game, and I consider it a form of entertainment. I am not making any judgment calls about anyone else's preferences for how they play! I think it's terrific that a game accommodates a wide range of notions of what a game is!

posted a message on What have you done recently?

Haha, I ran into an area with a whole herd of wild horses. I have tamed a couple, but now, I can't seem to find a saddle. The branch of the abandoned mine I found first, was just a little stub of the mine. I need to explore all of the main mine, but first, I need to find a way into it. LOTS of lava lakes and water lakes dot the area, underground.

LOL at your last sentence, Sharpe103.

I am reticent, by nature, but I've been posting a fair bit. Thanks for tolerating me on this thread -- didn't, of course, MEAN to be intrusive. And thanks too, for your advice on progressing with Minecraft. I will take that all to heart! I try hard to get up and get AWAY from my desktop, nowadays, because I have spent a lifetime doing computer "stuff" (working in a tech department)! So, I actively try NOT to spend hours on Minecraft at a time (but, I find that hard). I definitely will be making slow, deliberate progress. I'm in awe of a lot of the accounts that I see here, even lately. So, I suppose back in the heyday, I might very likely have completely felt overwhelmed. But, I'm sorry for learning of your perspective about what once was.

As to Twitch - I don't 'get' it very well. I visited Valve/Steam, a bit, but, I am not very interested in live gaming -- shy as I am I don't play multiplayer, let alone, sit and play alongside a bunch of other people!! So Twitch's apparent emphasis in casting your gameplay, meh! I am just old-fashioned. :-)

posted a message on What Is Most Memorable Minecraft Moment?

Truthfully? Most likely, it was the moment that I realized that holding the mouse button down would allow me to repeatedly punch the tree trunk!

Or the time I THOUGHT I had killed a skeleton, but it had simply swerved around, and it killed ME instead. Boy I felt really dumb about that death.

Finding dramatic vistas can still give me pause. Sometimes most of the terrain in my worlds is sort of humdrum, but every now and then a miles-high waterfall or lava flow pop into view. I enjoy exploring worlds a lot.

Why does nobody want to talk about what they have done in Survival anymore, even more so for Creative, or want to share their experiences?

I see other online communities that are flourishing, as well as other ones that are languishing similarly to this one. I have lately taken up swimming as an adult. It's very hard to find active adult swimming discussions that aren't around either triathlon or competitive swimming. (Just an example).

I post a bit about what I've done lately. But tbh, much of what I am doing is not novel. Others have already done it, posted screenshots, and written verbose posts about it. Is my discovery that I like the look of floors made of birch, really going to incite a lot of discussion today? I think not. And so, I tend to read and not post. I'm not a big mob fighter, so I don't have war stories. I enjoy wandering a world, mining, building, gathering resources, watching sunrises and sunsets, fishing, maybe occasionally skirmishing (but I badly need to resolve some performance issues with my existing setup).

I was not here "in the beginning" and so I feel a little like an outsider.

So, are all of us retreating into our own fantasy worlds? Yikes!

I don't usually have lot to contribute, because until just recently I have had a very hard time sticking with a world to any real extent, making any sort of attempts at constructing more than simple survival huts. A lot of the biomes in my worlds have been on the pedestrian-looking side.

I DO often visit and I read a lot more than I post ..... perhaps, there is just so much already on the forums, for those who take the time to search through, that a lot of what can be said, has been said?

It's weird, though, those numbers you provide, TheMasterCaver. It would for sure make one think the game was dead!

Just a side note - I don't find the forums all that quiet or useless here. However, I DO also look in on reddit and also, PlanetMinecraft looks to have forums but I haven't explored them too much. I realize that, compared to many, I am a raw newbie. So perhaps things interest me, that no longer hold any appeal for others here. I do appreciate nearly all of the comments I find on the forums here. My own specific puzzle, lately, is why there isn't more discussion of some of the machine-specific aspects of the game.

I intend to upgrade to a newer processor and computer system, but I just .... haven't yet .... (life!). So I have wondered why things like erratic mouse cursors on old AMD integrated graphics processors, with Optifine running, are unresolved. It appears maybe most of the Minecraft world has just moved on and upgrades have eliminated the problem. But, it seems odd that even archive searches never revealed anything but workarounds. That's my sole realy issue with playing Minecraft: that there isn't a forum addressing this sort of issue. I could experiment with what settings in the AMD Catalyst Control Center make Optifine happy, but, that's a lot of time away from playing the game, and, well, I guess like everyone else, I would prefer to spend time playing and live with the pain of the erratic cursor. (It also means I shy away from Hard game mode, since it's virtually impossible to do melee fights)

posted a message on New player Tips & Tricks

Welcome to our obsession scabrawl! There are lots and lots of terrific tips given in this thread!

Depending on how you like to play, there is a huge degree of customization and modification you can find/do for Minecraft. I keep coming back to the game and exploring further in old worlds.

When you get killed, don't automatically rage quit or delete that world; you'll come back to it another time and find smarter ways to explore and create!

Play around too, with the game modes. You can do things in Creative that are no fun in Survival; and similarly, there are fun things about Survival on "Peaceful" and "Easy" and "Hard" that are all unique!

    Very nice!

My buildings always turn out square and "functional". I'm afraid I don't have much imagination when it comes to buildings. My warehouse houses wares, and my iron golem farm farms iron golems. They just do what they do without looking at all interesting.

Yes, this is mostly me, too. I DID add a peak roof to one building, not too long ago. I had posted about trouble figuring out how to do this, and followed several posters' kind hints, and got it done. But, I typically have not bothered making things "pretty," that is, landscaping, adding roads, establishing city centers or small towns.

I have found a new to me YT channel, however, and I've been getting inspiration from watching some of those videos, as well as always finding something I would like to try, here on the forums. I am just pretty slooooow at actual implementation of my plans I think!

This by far qualifies as, I think, my newbie-est newbie mistake. Well, aside from so often just blundering right into lava and not being quick to place cobblestone to block it.

This is a very reassuring thread to read -- even now, and I am no longer so much a newbie!

posted a message on Miner seeking advice on constructing roofs

Just a quick update to say, the tips are working! I have gotten distracted a bit because I have mined quite a few emeralds (so I need to scout around to find a village), but I am about halfway done with a nice roof over a smallish house now! This makes me quite unreasonably happy!

Thank you for the empathy (and jokes too!!) and for the tips, too. Funny I have NO problem placing slabs, and yet for some reason it hasn't translated to my stair placing. I'm sure it's true that it's partly because I just don't practice placing many stairs. I can work on that and I am sure it will help.
