I mined at just barely below the surface level. I called iron "silver" and actually managed to collect quite a bit of "silver", but the tools I made with the stuff broke really quickly.
Sid Meier's Civilization is one of my favourite game series ever. How many of you guys have played a civ game before?
For those who don't know, Civilization is about basically building up a civilization from the dawn of man to the future, working with and against other civilizations along the way to achieve victory in one of many ways.
I was low on food and I encountered an NPC village, so I stole all the wheat and murdered several villagers. I realized I had made a terrible mistake though, as the town was about a 3 minute walk from my main city and when villages actually have a purpose, that village was likely going to be important. So I built a road to the village and a bridge, now I'm going to build an inn inside the town.
Moral of the story is don't kill the poor guys, they might actually be important some day.
It's not updates that's killing it; it's our own skill level and the fact that we've pretty much killed the learning curve. I'll admit I felt it too, that the game is becoming less fun at some points, but I recognize that the reason for this feeling is because I, like a lot of veteran players have played the game to death and learned everything there is to know, from how to make an ideal mob farm to which layer to mine for diamonds. You can't blame updates for killing the spark, we kill the spark ourselves.
I built a power station in my village and I have all of my redstone torches in there. Basically, despite the obvious inefficiency of it, all of my redstone power comes from a single building. Why? Because it's fun, duh. It also allows me to universally control redstone circuits, so it does somewhat have a practical purpose.
I had read about "redstone" before on the wiki at the time, but not really that much (I had just seen the page name for it on the wiki, so really all I knew was the name and appearance). When I encountered it, I was like "oh, it's some of that redstone stuff or whatever" and I kept it, with no idea how to use it.
As we all know, giving the fans an opportunity to give feedback to Mojang regarding bugs and exploits is a stupid decision and shows Mojang's weakness.

As for getting a supply of wood, it's incredibly easy to set up a tree farm.
