If you ask me Minecraft needs a link for people who bought minecraft where you can download older versions. :Pig:

Why? If you don't want to update, you have the option not to...
You are also completely able to simply back up old versions before updating.

    Open minecraft.

    click "Mods and Texture packs"

    Click "Open Texture Pack Folder".

    there you go.

That button is and has broken on Mac for quite some time. As far as I know, it is still broken in 1.5

Goto %appdata% in your user folder (usually c:\users\your user name\appdata\

if you can't see the folder, press the alt key to pull up the menubar in your user folder, goto the tools menu, click folder options, goto the view tab, make sure the "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" radio button is selected, and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

Please read the post immediately above yours, and, in fact, the entire thread.
This is on a mac. Mac's have no %appdata% folder.

    OT:
Press Command+Shift+G, and copy-paste the following into the resulting box, to ensure you didn't end up in the wrong folder.
    ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft

Please be sure to copy-paste this, and not just type it out.

I should point out that although that seems like characteristic behavior for malware, it could very well be nothing. It's possible that really is an added security feature, though I can't be sure.

Google seems to indicate that it really is part of "Verified by Visa," but I can't find any sources that aren't a random blog or Yahoo answers.

DON'T resize your sprites to 30x30. That will only work for square images. You need to scale the image properly (by the same ratio in both height and width) in order to use it.

So if your base image is 200x300, you would scale it to 20x30 (keeping the aspect ratio the same.)

Sounds like you've got a virus.

I have not yet entered any information, and nor clicked on anything on the site, it takes me directly there from Minecraft.net so I disagree that its a virus o:

What part of any of this indicates that you don't have a virus/malware?

You were taken from a link that should have sent you to paypal to a phishing site. That is exactly the kind of thing malware would do. You don't need to enter information into a site in order to get a virus. Once it's on your computer, it can sit and wait forever until you do.
This could be a virus you've had for months, which only activates upon accessing paypal, or other online money services.

If you don't have those backups handy, try this:
    viewtopic.php?f=17&t=296399

It works for everyone thats tried it.

Yes, there's an idea. If doing it legitimately doesn't work, break international copyright law, the Terms of service, and the forum rules.
By god I think he's on to something.

Because those images are gigantic. You can make any image in pixel art, since every image is made up of pixels. If you zoom in on your image (zoom, not resize) you can go through each pixel and place a block for it.

There's nothing to stop you from making a pixel art of a 1920x1080 image, but you will need 1920x1080 blocks worth of space.

Take your source image, scale it down to 30x30 (or whatever size you want, just make it small.)
You now have a tiny pixelated version of your image to use as a template.

This works best with sprite art because sprite art is designed to be low resolution, but naturally just shrinking a large image will remove all the detail and make it look horrible.

It's not a tab, it's a button. It is immediately above the "login" button. Clicking it will bring up a window with a "Force Update" button. Click that.

Download the new launcher (This has a news screen at the login page. If you don't have a news page there, you need to update.) from the downloads page, if you haven't already.

Before logging in, click the "Options" button, and then click "Force Update."
