Hard to get a good angle on it, but I've built my infusion circle again.

Hopefully more options than candles are added, with crystals gone and skulls nigh unobtainable the circle decorations are bit monotonous. Might colour some of them for visual variet

Out of curiosity, is it currently possible to research fortress armour or the advanced tools? Both say missing required research, and I'm rather stuck on what that could be.

Feels odd to be back on these forums. Thaumcraft always brings me in.

Just for fun, I played about with writing in the style of the thauminomicon while wondering about potential avenues thaumaturges might explore in universe. Not sure it's quite a thaumcraft style idea (And it doesn't lend itself to much in the way of gameplay) but it's an enjoyable exercise. The idea is for creating a self-contained micro-universe, akin to the mirror world of witchery.

The beginning of everything Forbidden knowledge: Taboo

The primal pearl represents a before now untapped source of insight into the origin of reality itself, being one of the last fragments of that primordial matter. Any attempt to simulate the conditions under which it arose into the current state of being should be doomed, with the new universe having nowhere to expand within the existing one.

But you have done it. By creating a specially designed cage from the wondrous void metal, you have managed to create a box the contents of which are outside of space itself. Within its confines, the pearl can unleash its true unlimited potential.

You are unsure what practical applications this may have, but how often do you get the chance to say you created a whole new dimension?

    Your own private hideaway

It was an obvious insight really. The portals you are familiar with do not exist in the nether prior to their construction in the overworld, nor vice versa. Thus it stands to reason that if you were able to attune a portal to your contained reality, you would be able to create one in there and gain access.

It was not so simple as that in practice of course, but once again you have succeeded. The frame of thaumium is necessary to channel the immense quantities of vis required to forge the bond with the dimension, though once the connection is established the raw magic of creation within will be sufficient to maintain it.

The dimension itself is rather small, albeit larger than the cage it is contained within.

kinda had a random thought i wanted to ask anzor. it's not a thing i want to see it's just a what if thing. what is the stance that thaumaturges would have with the other magic mods (botaiana ars magicka2 and blood magic) in a lore like state? also more of an stright out there that came from playing a diffrent mod, what would they view pokemon/pixalmon or something from the aether 2 mods like?

Thought I'd take a crack at this with some in character writing.

(Yes I know this is from a week ago, I don't check the forums much)

(I have played and love all these mods please don't think this is anything but silliness)

Botania: "When all you have is a hammer, all your problems look like nails."; substitute flower for hammer and you have the Botanists. Oh, they do wondrous things with them no doubt, but they could get just the same results with a fraction of the effort if they were willing to branch out from their floral obsession. Those special pools they use to store vis are fascinating though, and they have a good appreciation of magical tools. They're okay.

Ars Magica: Mages. "But we've always done things this way" mages. "You don't need to understand it, it's magic" mages. Never has a group held back the public perception of magic as this mystical and unknowable force so much as they have. Bloody mages. Never trust someone who conducts vis through their own body.

Blood Magic: Eesh, this lot. Alchemists, they call themselves. Bloody nutters I call them, provided none are in earshot. Power comes at a price, they say, acting like they're wise sages who control the balance of the world. They're usually less profound when something (inevitably) goes wrong and all their blood gets evaporated or something equally ghastly, assuming they didn't just go so insane with power that they got impaled on a pitchfork by an angry mob before then. It's like clearing your lawn of leaves with a flamethrower. It works, and it works well, but it's still a stupid idea.

Witches: Good grief, it's the worst of the lot. All the ritual and mysticism of mages, all the consorting with things best left alone of blood mages. Ever see what they put in those potions? Eye of frog, honestly. They act like you need these super specific ingredients when any old thing with Sensus would do. You could throw a carrot in and it'd work in place of it, but some witch who died before their grandparents were born said you needed frogs' eyes so that's what they use. I will give them this, those altars intrigue me. Drawing vis from Herba essentia contained in the world around them. I wonder how they work, but they don't take too kindly to me disassembling one to study it. More's the pity.

Pretty sure given the Discworld references that Thaumcraft actually uses Latatian, or "Very bad doggy Latin".

Completely unrelated, but a few moments after making this post I came across this while digging for sand and sandstone and thought I'd share. I've never seen so many vis crystals pack together like this before. I thought there would be a limit to how much the crystals could grow.

I've found a Terra cluster of similar size. Which was confusing, as it was in a plains with no notable Terra nodes.

Hey, in TC5 how hard is it to start new crystal patches once you've found a starter patch?

The infusion recipe to make a shard into a plantable one is fairly simple. You shouldn't struggle.

Of course, in order for it to grow at all you'd need a fair bit of vis in the aura. Maybe lay off the magic for a few days and build a nice new house to let it develop a buffer.

No-one seems to have done it so far, so let's have a look at my thaumcraft 5 base!

Aerial-ish shot of the base. Silverwood spamming means not getting a pure node in the way is tricky.

Interior. Interior decorating remains a weakness.

Alchemy room. The arcane furnace is through that door to the right, up the stairs is the balcony from the first shot. The other building is just an infusion room, and looks much like any infusion room does.

On the note of how much aspects are used, vis-wise Ordo seems to be in excessively high demand.

I haven't made a frost foci yet, but if it's really that bad then I'm not gonna make one at all. The frost focus has been really, really underwhelming compared to the shock focus. The normal projectile can't really be used at close range without risk of it bouncing off the target and hitting the caster. It's kinda tricky at medium and long range cause it's heavily affected by gravity. That scattershot was pretty much the only thing the frost focus had going for it, and now it sounds like that's gone.

I made one to hunt wisps, mostly due to lack of potatoes. Terribly underwhelming, less heft than a bow and less damage at that. Plus I managed to hit myself in the face more than once. The only real benefit I can see is in the slowing effect, but why get something slowed when you could get it dead? Even then the pech's curse does the same job better.

    (Also nice Shagaru Magala avatar)

In less complain-y news, the new alchemical furnace is really growing on me. After upgrading it to thaumium (Which in turn had prompted me to make new wands to do so, I always loved how thaumcraft gates progress like that to encourage making stuff) and attaching three auxiliary vents, the flux produced is down to tremendously manageable levels. There's a lot more thought going into how I use the machines in thaumcraft now. Any update is bound to have teething trouble at release, but I can see TC5 being super awesome.

Final note: I've found the best way to get rid of the inevitable bucketloads of terra essentia is to combine it with ignis (Which has a perfect source in netherbricks) and make lava.

After a brief failed experiment of getting rid of a hungry node by merging a pure node with it, does anyone know if there's a priority to what a node becomes when two merge? Like Hungry > Pure > Normal, it becomes whichever is highest?

More than anything what I want from the wand recharging research is an equivalent to node preserver. Have it stop drawing from the aura when it gets low enough that it would cause problems.

I can add to the "not seeing any consequences of flux at low levels" observations. Mine rarely gets above a tenth or so before it all drifts off into neighbouring chunks.

It'd be nice if lower levels could eventually dissipate on spawning wisps or similar. It seems like there's no way to get rid of flux other than having taint spawn, and that's not something I'd like to happen unpredictably inside my base.

I disengage lurking mode at last!

All these horror stories of taint have me scared to do much in the mod, I admit, especially with how little the thauminomicon reveals about the process. From what I can gather it'll spawn taint stuff when the flux/vitium (Slightly confusing that both terms are used) gets to a certain unspecified level, presumably consuming the flux in the air. Should the flux get too high, too fast, it'll create tainted things capable of producing flux themselves. Am I correct?

Tainted shards as well are confusing me. Do they automatically appear when the flux is high enough? Appear by corrupting regular shards? Or are they only found in naturally tainted biomes to begin with and have to be grown from there?

Side-note: The centrifuge still mentions using a buffer, but it's either very hard to unlock or isn't actually in TC5.

I'm sure I've said it many times before, but tempestas is just another niche aspect. The only options are to shoehorn it into items that have little to no connection to weather, simply toss it aside like granum and saxum, or let it simply sit in limo between the two by existing but having no practical use.

It's a baffling one, as it's been about since at least thaumcraft 3 and not once had a use.

There's a player on the server I'm on now has Tempestas. If we really wanted some we could have her jump in some liquid death repeatedly.
