I'm making a farming apparatus for loot from hostile mobs. Do torches repel hostile mobs? (I want to keep them away from my walls)

I know this seems stupid, but I don't have the time to do 20,000 experiments.

When I use .zip files directly from the internet, it crashes minecraft. When I uncompress it and compress it again, it shows up in the menu, but does not work.
