It is going to be incredibly unlikely as well due to the number of people applying, but is more probable than everyone getting accepted. The reason being is though there are a few hundred applications, only a small percentage merit a closer look, and of those another percentage is written off as well. You have to understand what is expected of a moderator to understand why though. You have the ability to delete threads/posts, move threads, be willing to give infractions to people you may consider your friends, etc. They have to believe they can trust you to operate purely as the rules dictate without their constant watch (because there is no way 8 admin can see everything that 60 mods do, or whatever our numbers are at now). They also have to trust that you'll do what they want. You can hate a rule all you want, but you have to enforce it, along with anything the forum admin tells you to do (whether you agree with them or not). Of course, you can have a say and disagree and talk to them to tell them why, but the FA has final say and if they tell you to do something you don't have much of a choice.

That situation is pretty rare though, as the FAs are nice and understanding, so if you have decent reasoning behind not wanting to do it then they'll at least hear you out. I don't think I ever had to tell someone to do something they didn't want to in my year as FA.

Of course. There is no minimum requirement for moderator recruits. If no one suits the job, then no one gets it. There is now plenty of mods that there isn't much of an urgency when it comes to getting mods, so they can be a bit stingy if they wanted to and wait to give it to people who truly seem to deserve it.

Alternatively, several can also be selected at a time. It's doubtful that an entire batch would ever be selected, but technically it isn't impossible. Just incredibly improbable.
