I don't think golems are an efficient source of iron. They are tough to kill, and quite rare. Thinking about it, iron already is sort of infinite, since the minecraft world is pretty much infinite.
And you'd be completely wrong.
Of course iron is already infinite, but it's that with the golem farming it becomes incredibly easy to farm massive amounts of it without having to build a mine or actually go looking for it.
In the time it takes you to kill an iron golem, you could've ducked into a cave, bonked a zombie on the head, and found 10 pieces right in front of you. Iron is so ridiculously common now that crying over iron golems making it infinite is just stupid. You would not run out of iron even if the golems did not drop it, unless you want me to believe that've mined all the iron from 0x0 to the Far Lands in all directions.
No, seriously. Jeb and the AI programmer are doing magic. I love every single thing in 1.2, and can't wait for the release. The AI, the new villages and now the new biomes, drops and stairs... This all was just nescessary, and they should have added this a long time ago. 1.2 is going to be great, much bigger than 1.1, and much more useful than 1.0.
I couldn't have said it better myself. I completely agree. I can hardly wait for the full release.
Have fun using over half your iron sword on one golem :smile.gif:
Firstly, as said above, a sword has many many more uses than it takes to kill a golem. a sword takes 2 iron to create, and at minimum a golem drops 3.
Secondly, no mob grinders rely on swords. There are a great many ways to cause damage, and some ingenious contraptions out there. Fire, lava, drowning, falling, crushing etc are all viable methods to kill things.
I'm still not convinced. It's the most powerful mob in the game (besides the Enderdragon), it kills other mobs for you, and it's worth 36 iron ingots.
It takes 36 ingots to create one, but if it respawns quickly enough then it certainly isn't "worth" that to keep it around.
Depending on how they spawn (let's say they spawn every evening, if there isn't one around) then 5 minutes before sunset, it would make sense to kill the existing golems for iron, because you'll have a new set soon anyway.
I don't think farming golems is over powered because of their limited spawn rate, but it's still something to keep in mind about generating iron easily and quickly without having to go out and actually mine some.
Are you sure they can't be effectively farmed? Do you have any reasoning behind your belief? Any testing or other evidence?
Depending on how quickly they will respawn in villages, and on what they're vulnerable to, it's certainly not hard to envision people building contraptions to easily farm iron ingots without having to leave the comfort and safety of the village.
... or just play like you normally would and accept the fact that the possible release date is in 1-2 weeks.
Don't tell me you're asking because THAT's the date you're going to play again?
That's the date that I'll be playing again. Well, a few days after actually. I have to wait for bukkit to update and some of my plugins.
I haven't been playing for the past few weeks because I'll just have to start over in 1.2 for the jungles, ocelots etc.

You only need 2. Just find a village and build the spawner under it.

As far as mob spawners go, I think it's the easiest and most simple to make. It's really pretty basic and wouldn't take much time.

Use the same technique as a zombie farm: bring them down to half a heart of life and finish them off with a punch.
I agree that the spawn rate should probably be changed, rather than making them only drop when killed by the player.

You really think so? Have a look here then.

I quite like it too. I know it doesn't make sense logically, but I like that they're solid windows

No one in their right mind farms mobs with a sword. They build something to deal damage via falling, fire, lava, crushing, drowning etc.
Finding a village is easy, and building a device to kill golems would be relatively easy as well.

Anyone know if caves are fixed?

No one's whining, so stop whining about it.
We're asking questions and discussing possible outcomes. I do believe that's what these forums are for.
