Some power plants are automatic. Especially the ones which power the main internet computers, since it needs to be reliable.
Anyways, the fact we can't place/break blocks automatically means we can't have fully auto machines. However, some people say that "Least human interactions counts" and I don't mind that, I am just stating my opinion on why this isn't fully automatic in my view.
No power-plant will be 100% without human operation and you also ignored the number of IT professionals that have to maintain the computer systems that run the internet, servers, routers, and your local ISP.
Automatic just means it will run a specific operation automatically, there is nothing in the definition of automatic that states there has to have no interaction or that automatic machines will never run out of materials. There is fundamentally no difference between "fully automatic" and just "automatic". "Fully" is just a way to emphasize or give it more depth, potentially an exaggeration, it's all semantics and by definition "fully automatic" doesn't even exist, and is only ever referred to normally when talking about firearms.
It's generally a bad idea to post an argument with nothing but your opinion to back you up. Everybody is entitled to their opinion but if you have no facts then to go around saying "you're wrong because my opinion says so" is just bad practice.
Nope. not fully automatic.
Nor is a machine gun. Especcially because the trigger has to be pressed. 'Fully automatic' is a gun term, but that is off topic.
On topic, a fully automatic example is the internet. It fully automatically assigns IPs, checks websites, and all that crap. Noone has to do anything to let the internet work.
So comparing this to a machine gun is off topic but comparing to the internet is on topic? Okay, let's expand your example. The internet runs on computers, computers need power, power is supplied by power-plants and power-plants have to be maintained by people, therefore by your own reasoning the internet is not fully automatic. Were talking semantics here and for all intents and purposes there is really no difference in calling a Minecraft brewer "automatic" or "fully automatic"
Don't call this "fully automatic". This is "automatic" at best. It brews automatically, yes - but only if the player supplies it with water bottles and ingredients. That's exactly what a brewing stand does at well, the only difference being the amount of potions it brews. A "fully automatic" contraption must be able to work without forcing the player to do anything. (Except building and not destroying it, of course.)
So a machine gun isn't fully automatic because it has to be reloaded? That doesn't make sense. It's still fully automatic even if it will only continue brewing as long as it has the proper materials.
Which often results it in being false not much later because someone went :CHALLENGE ACCEPTED:
That sort of competition is good fun though, I like improving designs.
Oh yeah I love competition too, just the other day somebody posted a simple, effective and practical design and I took it as a challenge to make something complicated, slow, and completely impractical. If it's just a matter of a simple circuit you can still prove you were first (if in fact you were first). There is a race situation that happens every update to be the first at designing a new circuit or function. If somebody comes along after you've posted the "smallest" or "fastest" of something and posts one smaller and faster after you have then the time stamps will show that. A simple solution is just to not deal in absolutes. Don't claim to be the best just state and show what you have. I usually just say something like "as far as I know" that way I'm can be proven wrong but I'm not making absolute claims that I can't back up with facts.
If we couldn't post things because someone has made something better at some point in time, this forum would be a very rubbish place to be.
Although having the snide people that decide they must point out that yours is worse, I guess, doesn't help.
Keep posting things, don't be discouraged.
I have no problem with people posting their own designs and taking their own approach but if somebody is going to make claims as to being the smallest or fastest or whatever they should make sure this is true.
Competition leads to innovation, there is nothing wrong with not being the best, it usually encourages people to work harder to get better.
Yeah, it's most likely caused by the new stupid texture pack system.
Some of the textures are wonky for now but it's a snapshot so they will be fixed before the release.
What makes it stupid? The fact that you can now animate just about every texture? The fact that when the game updates you won't need to update your texture packs to get access to the new blocks? The fact that it will have native HD support? The fact that you can easily mix and match textures from different packs regardless of resolution? The fact that it will be significantly easier to add new blocks when the Mod API comes out?
Are you making an informed decision or one of "Oh no my current texture pack doesn't work" (use the stitcher provided by Dinnerbone) or one of a texture pack creator who has to update their texture pack?
I did some testing to see exactly what timing it took to distribute specific numbers of items. There seems to be a base of 3 ticks per item but that number goes up for larger numbers of items. A single item also works better with a 2 tick pulse and if you have a hopper feeding another hopper as well as being pulled from it those hoppers will move items faster.
I'd have to do a lot of testing and actually record the results to get a better idea of how long of a pulse is needed to put out specific large quantities of items.
Coal isn't wasted because the speed it takes to smelt one item is slower than the hopper putting in more
I'm talking if you have stacks that are not divisible by 8. Unless you only put in stacks of 8,16,24,32,40,48,56,64 then you will always waste coal. I know coal is plentiful especially if you gather it with fortune 3 but there are those out there that are OCD and will only smelt in perfect stacks.
Yes, a two tick pulse turning power off of a hopper should allow a single item to transfer. I've also made a timer that transfers 8 ore at a time and only when 8 can be pulled from storage to smelt automatically without wasting coal.
You just cannot have another hopper below the one you are powering or it will automatically pull from the hopper above.
Here's what I've done. it's a very simple compact design, done in the default texture pack as to not kill your eyes. http://imgur.com/a/TvPHI
Oh also sorry for posting so late. I did this around 1am, but the forums were down for like 2 hrs.
I might also mention there is a way to make the tunnel down completely seamless with no holes, but it would be less compact(not that this is very compact to start, lol)
My automatic storage system will sort, smelt and store. It also uses a circuit to only feed 8 ore into the furnaces at a time so it will never waste coal. It also feeds coal automatically and stores the extra into chests.
You need to be able to craft a bowl of milk and place it somewhere then the cats will stop following you. I had a few but it was impossible to tame more because the cats following me would spook the ocelot .
It's definitely not a left hand holding sand. The block you are holding also is hidden when the hud is, so you cannot see the block and not the hud. The picture doesn't look like it has had dimensions altered to erase the hud either.
The left of the chest also doesn't look like it has a block sitting next to it or at the corner because you can still see the side of it.

I never finished mine, it was just a concept. Oh yeah codecrafted is very practical... hmmm now the wheels are spinning, I've got some ideas.

Sure, It's still not optimized but I put it into a more practical demonstration.
