Just to add to the collection of designs, here are two more:

(5x1x4 - not counting the support; I almost stopped using monostables for clock inputs after I learned about this)

(6x2x2 - not counting the lever; same principle, just modified it to a more vertical setup)

Those are really good designs. I still like using good old fashion pulse limiters. Redstone is cheap and pistons expensive so I don't like using pistons (I always try to consider cost when building so sticky pistons are not cheap if you are on survival). These require a piston to break the redstone line anyway so it's actually cheaper to combine the piston break and pulser.

A pulsar (that device with four torches that burn each other out) is largely useless as a clock due to the burn each other out part. There's no way to have a constant clock pulse from it.
Also, it pulses on a 1 game tick speed, which is 0.5 redstone ticks, so things like torches don't respond to it.

In any case, smallest 1 tick clock:

Has to be manually started, but it's 100% accurate.

Yeah I really don't know what to call these bloody clocks... some people call them 1 tick and others tell you that's wrong and they are 2 ticks. I am more inclined to call then 2 ticks because it's a pulse every 2 ticks. One tick on two ticks off.

I've also built one of these that would reset itself but I destroyed it when building something else.

    Looks large and inconvenient.

Yeah I really don't understand these things, they were a cool gimmick but they are slow and noisy. You can walk faster and a track would deliver a Mine-cart and would be way more efficient and capable of turning and going up and down hills.

I should also note the the 3 wide version is stack-able. They just have to be activated in the right order or it will pulse the piston of the one next to it.

It's better to have multiple options, sometimes the "smallest" won't fit due to it's specific dimensions.

    Nice job but...

Source : the vertical logic compendium

OOOOOH 1x8x3 NICE!!! That is much better. I covered my bases with "as far as I know" and I was interested in seeing if there was smaller. I originally built the 4x3x3 as it has a really nice on ground footprint and only added the 2 wide and 1 wide to be more thorough, thanks for pointing that out.

5x4x2 meh... it could be made one lower but then it would be 6x4x1 but I guess that's still something for being a 1 block tall model.

    Quote from Bardouli

I think that your design are similar to those one. But your clock are also well design : Pulse Limiter and piston RS Nor Latch, and show that you have a perfect undertstanding of redstone, but i think it's hard to make smaller than those two previous design because they are logic and use already "short" solution.

But to tell the truth, i'm jealous, because i can't do this sort of things! :tongue.gif:

Based on what you see, any redstone addict can tell that's a 1/1 clock (1 tick powered, 1 tick un powered), but i have a doubt on the vertical design because of the repeaters loop at the start of the clock.

I've called it a one tick clock in the past and somebody was like "No that's two ticks"... there are 2 repeaters so it's a two tick clock, it's just on 1 off 1.

Usually shutting down and restarting mine craft fixes burn out bugs so you may have to restart the server to fix it. Minecraft 1.0 has torch burning out issues, I think your only other option is to use a snapshot, I got tired of torches burning out for no reason so I loaded up the recent snapshot.

Is a two tick clock the same as a pulsars speed or a little bit slower?

They are the same, the fastest you can cycle redstone is two ticks, One tick on, One tick off,and repeat. There are micro pulses but I hooked a micro pulse clock up to a dispenser and it seemed to fire at 1/3 the rate.

Recently I was playing around with self contained 2 tick rapid clocks and as far as I know I've come up with the smallest designs. These contain a sticky piston and pulse limiter to activate and deactivate the clock via a single input. These can be wired to a pressure plate for a very fast dispenser (originally why I built it)

    3x4x3:

    Dust under the block - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ^

    2x7x2:

These are larger so I hid them.
    1x8x5 (1x9x4):

The last one can be shifted so it fills a 1x9x4 space.

Bardouli Pointed out a smaller 1 wide version:

This was a challenge to make a hidden door with nothing visible even the pistons.

The schematic of the final version of my first door is on page 2. Although I never exported the better version 2 door that hides the pistons during operation.

Monopoly2121 also did a completely hidden version and he does include the schematic

Yeah I loaded up 64 dispensers with 64 arrows each and fired them all with a two tick clock. My frame rate dropped to un-playable very fast. Even after I managed to break the clock. My frame rate didn't come back up until I picked up all the arrows, then I was able to check the dispensers and they still had 19 arrows left.

A 3x3x3 T-Flip Flop that requires a hoe to work?... That's not the smallest either...

This is technically the smallest (ignore the pitons on the right, I just have it set up for duel output).

If you use the top piston it's 1x3x4

Also you don't need to be able to build a computer to be a pro. Those people probably already have engineering backgrounds and already know how to do that in real life.

When they get to this small though it really doesn't matter, you use the one that fits best with your circuit. Any one tick pulse limiter can do this job
