I understand where you are coming from, but think about thing's from Notch's perspective. This is his game that he is making, he said he doesn't want people modding yet people do it anyway and now some complain that he is, in a sense, interfering in what modders are doing to HIS game.
I had no idea he felt that way. That's understandable even if I don't particularly agree with it. The modders aren't making money of his product. He shouldn't be so upset about it.
1)The thing about minecraft is that Notch isn't making it for us, he is making a game that he wants to play. He doesn't give a crap that mods a failing, because he doesn't want mods, he wants his own game.
This is completely selfish and egomaniacal. Plus, I doubt that's how he actually feels. When you design a game and are making money from people buying it, you are no longer making it for yourself. You give the people what they want, or else they'll stop buying it. It's common sense.
I've bookmarked this thread; really interested in how this develops.
Especially this:
to make the nether more like silent hill.
And this:
If you could make a mod that uses a separate terrain from the regular world, that would help so much with the texture pack I'm planning to create. =)
Eerier music that plays while in the Alternate Hell world would be awesome as well. Maybe even some Silent Hill themes such as this one (although I'm not sure its possible):

What do you think of this as a Nether theme?:
