Haven't seen this reported. When blocks are smoldering due to creeper or TNT explosions, you are unable to place blocks on them until the smoke dissipates.
Due to how cool the creeper is, I've been thinking about other enemies with interesting gameplay mechanics.
Dread Creeper: A faster variant of the creeper. Instead of exploding on death, it explodes when it gets close to you (or on death if it doesn't manage) Imagine defending a castle in multiplayer, and having to take these out before they can blow holes in your walls.
Stone Colossus: A massive golem made out of stone blocks. It can't be defeated with conventional weaponry. Instead, you have to mine part of it's leg (which is made of ore) causing it to topple over. This requires you to stay close enough to continuously destroy the leg while dodging its slow but powerful blows. When it falls over, you can mine its head to kill it. Perhaps would make a good megabeast type monster.
Can't think of anything else right now, any ideas?
Edit: I tried to post this in Suggestions, but was unable to for some reason
Is it just with trees you're having trouble? Mining tree leaves only sometimes produces a sapling block. Or, none of the blocks you mine are producing harvestable blocks?
How is this realistic? Grass doesn't die in real life on a cloudy day. It's already unrealistic enough that it dies in shady areas in game. Imagine moving patches of dead grass lol.
I think I remember reading somewhere that Notch plans to implement ragdoll physics for the player models. If so, some sort of rudimentary physics engine might not be out of the question.

Actually, on further investigation it appears to be admin block on the bottom with 1 layer of lava above.

Pretty sure that's a bug and not a feature. If not fixed, it would probably make many of the coming game modes pretty lame.
