posted a message on Java JRE version for Linux server

I just run a couple of servers for family and friends on a Linux system. I currently use openjdk-8-jre-headless to run the servers, but noticed thee is JRE versions 11, 13 and 14 available too. Is it worth or recommended using one of those version? All the setup guides seem to use version 8, but I don't know if that's just because it's the lowest common denominator, or the preferred version.

    Any thoughts?

I guess also the same question for the client too.

    Thanks

They aren't causing any issues that I can tell in game, and everyone who needs to connect, can connect. Just wanted to find out if these are something that can be safely ignored or if I should investigate further.

I also have three datapacks from the Vanilla Tweaks collection (Armor Statues, Multiplayer Sleep, Graves) at their current released version last I checked. Running standard Vanilla 1.16.2 on Ubuntu LTS 20.04 (i5-7600, 8Gb ram, SSD) with 6Gb allocated in the Java command line and using aikars flags.

Also out of curiosity, if there much in the way of functional difference between Vanilla and, say, PaperMC, in regards to how it plays? I've been thinking about making the switch, but my nephew says he wants to stay vanilla to keep it original. He doesn't buy the server hardware though!

    Thanks

posted a message on Add profiles/presets to Music and Sound settings

    Hey there

Would anyone think it's a good idea to have profiles, or customisable presets, to the music and sound settings?

My thoughts are that I often change between desktop speakers, headphones, and my AV setup, and I have different requirements of sound volumes depending on what device I'm listening to, and whether I'm voice chatting or not. It would be incredibly handy to be able to define a preset setup so I can change the all the volumes automatically as the situation dictates. Even times between using an in-game farm and general play I might prefer different volumes (think Enderman or Cave Spider).

It's not a massive effort to change the volumes manually of course, would just be an added convenience, especially if some could be linked to a keyboard combination.

Anyway, just a thought for discussion.

When you say 9 hunger, you mean 9 lit up (so almost full) and not 9 non lit up (almost empty), correct?

... if you want to make the most out of a food it should be eaten when it will place your hunger level above its saturation value and no higher than 20* (starting hunger should be at least 5 for a steak and 9 for a carrot, which will result in 13 hunger/12.8 saturation and 15 hunger/14.4 saturation respectively). The same applies to multiple pieces of food; two steaks restore a total of 16/16 hunger/saturation while two carrots restore 12/12.

I have no idea what this means. Can you explain it or point me in the right direction please? In PM if you don't think it's relevant to the OP discussion.

posted a message on Moving items with water or hoppers

If I want to move items from one location to another (either horizontal or downwards), is it better for the server load to use flowing water or a sequence of hoppers. For this purpose consider all resources as unlimited, as I'm not wanting to consider in game resource efficiency, only load on the server.

    Thanks

For texture pack you could try ModernArch. They recommend SEUS though, but the texture look sweet. The 128x128 and 256x256 textures you can get for free. https://packminecraft.com/resource-packs

does it work if you remove the resource pack?

I'll try that next time we play. I don't have any trouble with the resource pack in single player though, so I hadn't considered it.

posted a message on Crashes on LAN but fine on single player

    Hey there

I only started playing Minecraft a short time ago with my son, so I don't know much about it's configuration options. With the set up I'm playing on, everything works fine, however whenever I join his world I get multiple crashes. Here is a pastebin link to the latest log https://pastebin.com/FuzNMqGM

Every log file looks more or less the same for this crash. I don't change anything between playing his LAN world and my own single player world. The in game performance is fine right up to the crash.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to stop these crashes, or at least make them less frequent?

    Thanks
