Yes it would be possible. Since nearly everything in mechanical logic can be reproduced with RS, the only limitations being size, speed and mechanical implimentation.

While not working exactly like the Enigma machine, the rotors could be replaced with an S = (4L-3)/2 state (s) minecraft rotors, where L is the length of the side of the rotor up to 11, and of course you coule impliment N of them, with (NS)! various permiatations.

In that sense minecraft could in theory produce a much stronger encoding system.

The devil would be in the detail, because you'd need to include a lot of state registers to record content from one rotor to the next. And even then having encoded a message, that message is stored in the RS states, not in an easy display. Given the fair complexity of a display and the need to have a large sample base to crack the code, it would be almost pointless to creating a MC code machine, since you'd never be able to develop a general decoder machine since the output of the encoder machine will be limited in overall size.

Futhermore while you could copy the machine and effectively run it in reverse to get your output, it would be far far far easier to simply make a more simplier encoder because what is there in MC that really need _that_ level of sercurity.

Build a caeser cipher machine, or something like that if all you want to do is pass over a location of diamonds....very few if any players will have built a decoder for even such a simple code in general, and it would be big anyhow. However all you would need to send receive messages is the cipher key, and a single row generator.

You kind of left out the part where you tell us what it does.

I think Steve has survived some sort of plague, although he is not completely unaffected: he has amnesia. That said, whatever plague is afflicting the land it seems to be four-phased in its devastating affects on the other residents:

1. The first plague stage is Village Idiot. This initial stages causes the villagers to become imbeciles and merely wander around their village, often getting locked in their own houses and falling in holes or ravines. They have no interaction with any of the places or items in the village (forge, library, etc.) and even ignore their own ready-to harvest wheat crop. They eventually starve and die, becoming...
2. A Zombie. They remember how to eat now and that is all they want to do. They seem to only be interested in eating Steve, and have no interest in eating any villagers. Still, they're dead and are rapidly decomposing. They continue to decompose until nothing is left but...
3. A Skeleton. Whatever brain power that pushed them to want to eat is gone (along with their physical brain) leaving their empty skull filled with anger at survivors, all of whom happen to be Steve. What space isn't filled with anger at Steve apparently drives a confounding proficiency at archery. Skeletons, being surprisingly flammable in sunlight, spend these daylight hours in caves and dark places crafting a near infinite amount of arrows to aid them in their war on Steve. Ultimately the skeleton succumbs to either Steve or to sunlight and reaches the final stage of the plague:
4. Fertilizer. The hearty femur bone survives immolation and is inexplicably chock full of organic nutrients, causing an unnaturally accelerated growth in almost every form of plant-life it touches once it is ground into a meal and applied directly. The plight of the plague-stricken villager isn't all for naught - their suffering brings growth and food to the land.

One theory is that Steve has contracted the plague, but is partially immune to it, causing only his amnesia. Given the length of time that Steve has been in the world, it is fair to postulate that he will not progress on to the Village Idiot phase.

I dont see the problem, myself. And it's not surprising, considering that Notch has always sorta used an older style of design, with alot of his ideas.

Alot of games these days EXPECT that you kill absolutely everything that moves. That wasnt always the case; I can think of alot of games from back in the NES days where some enemies... were really best avoided. You werent expected to kill them. You were expected to RUN FROM THEM.

An unstoppable monster adds something particularly dangerous to the game; not yet another mob that you can just fill with arrows and otherwise ignore. When something like this shows up, suddenly, you'd have to find a way to escape. You'd have to use different tactics to survive. It'd be a constant threat that'd make the Ender that much freakier and more dangerous.

He might keep it this way, or he might change it... either way, I think the dragon will probably end up being an interesting element of the game, whatever he decides.
